  1. ELMB++ ?? A. Marchioro PH-ESE/ME

  2. Agenda • Introduction • Potentially interested participants • Topics • How many ELMBs they are currently in use and for which applications • List of features used/not used • Requirements in terms of radiation hardness • Preliminary wish-list for new functionalities, interfaces etc. • Potential manpower/resources that could be providedby CERN and non-CERN members for a common effort (hardware and software).

  3. Why are we here ? • This meeting is organized solely to gather information concerning the possibility of building a RH version of the ELMB satisfying the need of a large community of users • To see whether there is enough interest among users to build a new RH version of the ELMB • To see if anyone is interested to come up with a broad proposal • To see if anyone could inject resources in the project if launched

  4. Current Version Functionality ATM128ega Processor 64 Analog Channels CAN network interface

  5. Presentations • Atlas wish-list • …

  6. Options • Replace Processor: • with RH version in FPGA • ASIC-RH versions of ATMega • ASIC-RH version of other microcontroller • ASIC-RH version of 32 bit micro (ESA-Sparc) • ADC • Downgrade ADC to 12/14 bit • Interfaces • Keep CAN and add WorlFIP • Keep CAN and add new hooks to enable Ethernet 100MB later • Local control • Add more digital IOs and have just one ELMB version (A + D)

  7. Options (cntd) • Keep 5V external powering and add local DC/DC • Redefine external powering to 2.5 V

  8. Processor issues • Flash memory is hard (impossible) to obtain in RH process • Booting procedure must be modified • Many internal peripherals in Atmel version; are they all used/necessary? • Is the current firmware using precise timing loops determined by current implementation? • How hard would it be to port the existing firmware to another processor?

  9. ADC Issues • CMS uses ~30,000 12/14 bit, 7 channels ADCs with I2C interface (0.25 um CMOS) • New 32 channels version is being finalized in 130nm • Temp sensor included • Range 0 to 1 V input • 16 bit is hard to get • Bandgap stability issues • General degradation with radiation • Calibration • … DCU25F

  10. GBT-SCA ADC new converter • 12-bit ADC • Dual-slope architecture • Single supply voltage: VDD = 1.2 V -8% to 1.5 V +8% • Reference clock frequency: 40 MHz • Max. conversion rate: ≈3.5 KHz (Max conversion period = 2*212*25ns) • Operating temperature: -30°C to +80°C • Input range: GND < Vin < 1 V • LSB (least significant bit) = 244 µV • Input channels: • 32 + 1 Temperature = 33 • Power consumption • 350uA @ 1.2 (420uW analog part ) • 130nm technology
