Deep Sea Exploration: What Lives in the Ocean?

Embark on a mission to discover the mysteries of the deep sea in this STEM lesson for ages 7-11. Explore the challenges of ocean exploration, the creatures that inhabit its various zones, and the technology used to navigate its depths. Learn about the dangers scientists face in submarines and engage in activities to understand the scale, depth, and significance of ocean environments.

  1. Submarine STEM Science | Ages 7-11 Lesson 2 What lives in the deep sea?

  2. Lesson 2: What lives in the ocean? Mission brief Hello trainee submariners! Welcome to your second mission. Today you’ll be finding out just how deep the ocean can be and exploring some of the submersibles we use in deep sea exploration. Start thinking about why exploration of this kind is so challenging and consider some of the dangers we might face. What do you think it’s like inside a submersible? Are you brave enough to travel to this dark and mysterious place? Oliver Steeds Good luck! 2

  3. Lesson 2: What lives in the ocean? Learning Outcomes 1. Identify living things, habitats and environments. 2. Understand the scale and depth of the ocean. 3. Make accurate measurements. 4. Explain why ocean exploration is challenging for humans. 5. Describe how different submersibles make ocean exploration possible. 6. Identify significant ocean zones. 3

  7. Lesson 2: What lives in the ocean? Why is deep sea exploration so challenging for humans? Respiration Humans can’t breath underwater so how will you access oxygen? Light The deeper you go the less light can penetrate the water, how can you over come this? Pressure Your squidgy body will be crushed under the immense water pressure in the deep, how will you survive? Predators Lots of sea creatures would enjoy you for their lunch, how can you protect yourself? 7
