  4. Sample Section 2: define and describe your landform A mountain is a type of landform that has both high elevation and high relief. This means that mountains are much higher than sea level and the land surrounding them. Generally, mountains occur as part of a mountain range, or group of mountains that are about the same shape, structure, and age. A mountain's base will cover at least a few square kilometers. Mountains rise to a point called a peak. The sides of a mountain can be very steep. An example of a mountain is Mount Whitney. Mount Whitney belongs to the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is the highest mountain in the continental US with an elevation of 14,505 ft (4,421 m).
