  1. Function of a Lung

  2. The respiratory system uses many parts for breathing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. • These include the nose, the trachea, and the lungs.

  3. First, air enters through the nose and mouthand passes through the larynx and the trachea. Once it enters the trachea, it branches out into tubes called bronchi. • These bronchi eventually separate into tiny alveoli, which are surrounded by capillaries (tiny blood vessels).

  4. The actual act of breathing involves two main actions: inhaling, which pulls air into the lungs, and exhaling, which pushes air out ofthe lungs.

  5. Your chest can allow air in and out as a result of a muscle called the diaphragm. The diaphragm makes up the floor of the chest cavity. • When you breathe in, your diaphragm contracts and moves down, creating morespace in your chest for your lungs to fill with air.

  6. When you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes,decreasing the space in your chest and forces air out of your lungs. • A body system that works closely with the respiratory system is the circulatory system.

  7. Inhaling & Exhaling

  8. This system aids in providing oxygen to all parts of the body and works with the respiratory system to carry oxygen to your cells and dissolved carbon dioxide back to your lungs. • The circulatory system is the method of transportation for all the blood that is pumped into and out of your heart.

  9. Today, we are going to build our own lung using a pair of scissors, a plastic bottle, and two balloons.

  10. First, start at the slit and cut off the bottom of the bottle • Next, put the end of the balloon through the mouth of the bottle • Stretch the mouth of the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. • Then, cut the small end of the balloon off and fold it over the bottom of the bottle you cut off • Hold the bottle and push in and pull out on the balloon on the bottom of the bottle

  14. The balloon represents the lung and diaphragm.

  16. The bottle represents the chest cavity.

  17. 4. What causes the balloon to fill up?

  18. The balloon fills up with air because when you push down on the balloon on the bottom (diaphragm), it creates more space in your chest for your lungs(balloon) to fill with air.

  19. 5. What gas flows into your lungs when you inhale? Exhale?

  20. When you inhale, oxygen flows into your lungs. When you exhale, carbon dioxide flows out of your lungs.

  21. 6. What is the function of the respiratory system?

  22. The primary function of the respiratory system is to exchange gases so that blood in the body receives oxygen.
