What is Duke TIP? • A self-supporting, non-profit, educational organization dedicated to the identification and support of academically gifted students. • Arm-in-arm with schools and families, Duke TIP works to identify talented young people and to provide them with a wide array of fulfilling educational opportunities, from 4th grade through 12th. • Founded in 1980, over 2 million students have participated in the Duke TIP Talent Searches.

  3. Talent Search Model Duke TIP offers a 4th/5th Grade Talent Search, as well as a 7th Grade Talent Search. Duke TIP understands that gifted students need special motivation and support. As such, the Talent Searches work to provide: • Above-level testing and appropriate assessment measures • Access to Duke TIP’s network of educational programs and resources • Motivation and encouragement for students focused on academic achievement

  4. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search

  5. Participation is Rewarding! Participants in the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search receive special motivation to focus on academic achievement and encouragement to continue challenging themselves. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with other academically talented students and to access an array of opportunities and resources. Participation in the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search allows gifted students to learn more about their academic abilities through optional above-level testing and assessment.

  6. Eligibility is an Honor! Students eligible to participate in the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search include: • Current 4th or 5th graders • Students who scored at 95th percentile or above on a grade-level standardized achievement, aptitude, mental ability test, or approved state criterion-referenced test • Students who live or attend school in our 16 state region

  9. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search Benefits Publications for the parents of gifted students • Duke Gifted Letter.An online newsletter for parents, DGL provides practical tools, inspiration, answers to pressing questions and review of educational research. • Staying on Course. A valuable resource for parents with articles written by professionals in the field of gifted education; suggestions for home activities and tips for advocating for your child at school.

  10. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search Benefits • Publications created specifically for the students that are both fun and educational.

  11. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search Benefits • Educational Opportunity Guide Online.This searchable online directory lists quality schools and summer programs that all Talent Search participants are eligible to attend.

  12. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search Benefits • Book Clubparticipants share responses to discussion questions via a secure blog, and participate in interactive, online lessons in language arts, social studies, math, and science - all driven by the selected book. 3 to 4 books are chosen per year.

  13. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search Benefits • Writing Contestentries are judged by members of the Duke faculty and TIP staff. Monetary prizes are awarded for each grade to the winners and to their enrolling schools. • 1st Prize is $250.00 • 2nd Prize is $100.00 • 3rd Prize is $25.00

  14. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search Benefits • Creative Writing Lessons offer self-paced, independent study in which students learn concepts and skills, develop story ideas and complete story prompts. • Math and Science CoursesincludeNumber Secrets and Secret Codes and Powerful Connections: Exploring Energy in Our Lives.

EXPLORE Testing • Duke TIP, in conjunction with ACT, offers this optional above-level testing experience to 4th/5th Grade Talent Search participants. • EXPLORE is an 8th grade level test, so participation provides families with an additional indication of where their gifted child stands academically. • Students who score in the 99th percentile on the composite section are honored at the 7th Grade Talent Search Recognition Ceremony in their state. • Fee: $35

  16. Enrollment is Easy • Enrollment begins December 1, 2009 • For expedited processing, register online at www.tip.duke.edu/45enroll • Or mail paper application to Duke TIP office • Talent Search Fee is $35 • Benefits continue through the 6th grade year

  17. Financial Aid is available • Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch are eligible for a complete fee waiver for the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search • $2.4 million was awarded in 2009 across all Duke TIP programs
