  2. Definition • CE is a process whereby an organization strive to build a good relationship with communities where it operates/impacts. • Longtime practice • An approach now globally promoted • Funders require an inbuilt CE programme

  3. NATURE OF CE You will have time to ask any question • CE is more of a dialogue: • communities get our • message. • They listen and then after ask questions/ bring in their • suggestions on the subject

  4. WHY CE? • Raising Awareness • Community/Stakeholders feedback • Builds trust and organizational profile • Promote study procedures & results

  5. Targeted Audience • Participants • Community leaders – T/As, Chiefs, Pastors etc • Health Centre Staff –Clinicians, nurses, HSAs • Stakeholders operating in the catchment area/ having a same area of focus • School children and Urban population as the whole • Mediaetc

  6. MLW CE Structure • Guiding strategy outlining CE activities summarized into two; • Main programme activities • Urban/School Science cafes • CAGs • Radio Programme • Staff forum(s) • Targeted National Health Events (Stakeholders)

  7. MLW CE Structure cont….. • Study Specific activities This involves briefing communities concerning a specific study. • Briefings with Community leaders • Briefings with health centre staff • Open day community briefings • Health talks

  8. WHO CAN DO CE? • Nurses • Drivers • Field workers • Researchers • EVERYONE CAN DO

  9. The role of nurses in CE!!!!! • The consent process is vital in CE • National health events • Health talks/ study briefings

  10. Science Communication welcomes any new constructive ideas as to how best Community Engagement can be improved and also involve as more nurses as possible.
