Maryland—haven for Catholics/ religious freedom/ escape persecution • Georgia—haven for debtors=better life in New World/ buffer zone from the Spanish • 2. grew cash crops especially tobacco, Carolinas=rice, used slave labor, plantation system • 3. Elite---white southern planters who had the most economic and political power. Lived in the Tidewater (area along the coast that had great land for farming). Greatest fear was slave revolts/rebellions • 4. Religion=diverse, religious freedom • Government=representative government • Economy=cash crops/ tobacco/ slaves/plantations

  2. Settling the Middle Colonies • 1. New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware • 2. encouraged shipping and commerce • 3. had a rich soil and mild winters • 4. attracted a population of great ethnic and religious diversity

  3. New Netherland (New York) • 1. the Dutch • 2. New Amsterdam was the largest city-built to defend the Dutch West India Company’s fur trading settlements • 3. Peter Stuyvesant expanded New Netherland by taking over the nearby colony of New Sweden in 1655 • 4. Patroon—system set-up by the Dutch East India Company to attract more settlers---a patroon was a person who brought 50 settlers to New Netherland • **4a. Received a large land grant, hunting, fishing, and fur-trading rights • 5. slaves---lives were harsh/ some rights of movements and property • 6. welcomed dissenters from Puritan New England, Quakers, German Lutherans, and French Protestants, even Jewish settlers were allowed 7. could NOT control the English and French settlers—English and French were more unified as a solid colony than the Dutch (were very diverse)

  4. The English Take Control—New York • 1. Viewed as a threat because New Netherland was in between New England and the Southern English colonies • 2. King Charles had his brother the Duke of York drive out the Dutch. When the Duke’s warships appeared off of New Amsterdam the Dutch surrendered to the English • 3. New Netherland was named after its proprietor the Duke of York=New York • Was the single largest land owner in North America

Duke of York gave land to 2 friends---George Carteret and John Berkeley • 5. tried to attract settlers by promising freedom of religion, large land grants, and representative assemblies • 6. Penn’s family was owed money by King Charles II. To pay off the debt the King gave Penn a charter from Pennsylvania • 7. the 3 lower counties of PA were granted their own assembly by Penn in 1701—and eventually became the separate colony of Delaware

Frame of Government—ideal of tolerance (all religions welcome, or no religion) • 12. many people came to PA for religious freedom and equality, many European nations • 13. hard work, thrift (management of money) • 14. longest growing season and fertile soil combined with hard work made PA wealthy
