  3. Starter Look at the next few images and try to see if you can work out what each of the pictures is showing. They will be either: CBD Inner City Inner Suburbs Outer suburbs

  4. Match the terms… An area of disused and derelict land in an urban area that is available for redevlopment. Greenfield The residential unit where people live. Brownfield Development An area of countryside or open space that has not yet been built on. Household Building up an area and changing the use of land.

  6. The problem… The UK’s population is increasing and is predicted to continue, giving a population of 52.5 million people in England by 2021. Estimates suggest that 4.9 million homes could be needed by 2030. The number of households has increased by 30% since 1971. Most of this increase in the UK is because people live alone – 7 million in the UK.

  7. Why do people live alone?

  8. Government target = Build 240,000 new houses every year by 2016 so that house prices do not spiral out of control. Where can we build these new houses?

  9. Sort out the statements into 2 columns… Colour the positives in green and the negatives in red…

  11. Consider • Cost of land • Close to transport • Distance from city • Sale value of homes • Terraced £150,000 • Semi £ 170,000 • Detached £ 200,000 • Flat £ 60,000 • Consider a list of good and bad points for each site
