  1. Session 3A Jesus Our Lord Doctrine 4

  2. Our Fourth Doctrine We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.

  3. Jesus – Unique in His Humanity • Philippians 2:5-7 • “Christ Jesus …being in very nature God…made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant…being found in appearance as a man.”

  4. Incarnation Emmanuel – God with us Story by Dan Stuecher Watching Doomed Sparrows

  5. Jesus – Truly and Properly God • His pre-existence as God from all eternity • His divine names and titles • His divine attributes, which can only belong to God • His divine works which also speak of His divinity • His acceptance of worship

  6. Jesus – Truly and Properly Man • The Bible says so • He possessed a human body • He possessed a human soul and a human spirit • He was very human in His many temptations JESUS IS STILL ‘TRULY AND PROPERLY GOD’ and ‘TRULY AND PROPERLY MAN

  7. Hebrews 4:14-16 • “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

  8. QUESTIONS • Explain in your own words what is meant by the incarnation. • What do you think were God’s reasons for wanting Jesus here on earth in human form? • Do you think that Jesus was tempted again after His great temptation in the wilderness? Give reasons for your answer. • Are your temptations like those of Jesus? How can He help you? • What are some of Jesus divine names and titles?

  9. Session 3B Man’s Sin –God’s RemedyDoctrine 5

  10. We know that God loves us and provides and cares for His children. Why is it then that so many disobey Him and fall into sin and wrongdoing? • Sometimes because they do not know. • Sometimes because they make mistakes. • Sometimes people choose to do wrong.

  11. Our Fifth Doctrine We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

  12. ‘a state of innocency.’ • In a unique fellowship with God, Adam and Eve were in a ‘state of innocency.’

  13. But by their disobedience… they lost their purity and happiness. • As recorded in Genesis 3, temptation came from the evil, who appeared in the form of a serpent. The temptation was threefold: • Satan suggested doubt concerning God’s goodness • Satan encouraged disbelief in God’s warning. • Satan stirred up desire for what God had forbidden.

  14. The Fall • Sin began among mankind when our first parents yielded to the devil’s temptation and disobeyed God’s righteous command. • This is called “the fall.” The fall is the traditional term referring to the first sin of Adam and Eve which brought judgment upon both nature and mankind.

  15. Because of their disobedience.. • Not only did Adam and Eve become sinners, but all their children through the centuries have become sinners. • The perfect man of creation was marred when Adam sinned. • Since then, people have a natural tendency to sin. • This is called “depravity.”

  16. QUESTIONS • Who or what determines whether the wrong things we do are done in ignorance, are mistakes in judgment, or are done willfully? • Should we feel guilty about our mistakes? What about regret? • What should we learn from our mistakes? • Why have “all men” become sinners? Is it not possible that some good people have stayed righteous? Have never committed a sin? Don’t need to be saved?

  17. Session 3C Christ’s Atonement Doctrine 6

  18. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved. Our Sixth Doctrine

  19. Yes, God has done something about it! • Atonement is the redeeming effect of Christ's incarnation, His sufferings, and His death. • Atonement means that Christ Jesus in His death dealt completely with the problem of sin. • However, since the fall, all of us became sinful; but through the atonement, Christ assumed the guilt of us all.

  20. Let’s Sing! He paid a debt He did not owe I owed a debt I could not pay I needed someone to wash my sins away. And now I sing a brand new song Amazing Grace the whole day long Christ Jesus paid the debt that I could never pay.

  21. Biblical Clarity • Love - The first truth is that the atonement expresses the loving heart of a God who cares. -- John 3:16 -- Romans 5:8 • Sin – Sin of man made the atonement necessary. • Substitution – Christ on the cross took the penalty of our sins.

  22. Atonement is made for the whole world • God excludes NONE. • There are no FAVORITES. • He said WHOSOEVER and we believe that He means it. • We come in through God’s door of mercy, one by one.

  23. QUESTIONS • Some people do not accept the divinity of Christ. What effect would that have on the atonement? • Why do you think that God makes it necessary for people to “will” or to want to be saved before they can be saved? • What could you say to someone who says, “I am too wicked to be saved.”
