Major Players • Japan • Becoming Ultranationalist because they did not receive the territory they wanted from WW I • Looking to expand and invade other nations • Germany • Owed money to most countries and experienced extremely high unemployment (40%) • U.S.A • Loaned almost all nations money to pay war debts • Is one of the big reasons for the worldwide depression

Britain • High degree of public unrest and political Instability • Workers mounted large scale protests and strikes against government factories • France • Extremely weak military—seeking to avoid conflict at all costs • Industrial Production fell by 50%—hurts France , as well as surrounding Nations • Russia • Communist Revolution takes place immediately following war • Country plunges into severe depression • Looking to ally with strong nation to return as a power

  4. Major Events • Worldwide Depression • Unstable Governments throughout World • High Debt: most countries need loans • 1929: U.S. Stock Market Crashes • Trading falls—price of gold falls • Every Major Country in some sort of recession or depression • On average 25% of workers are unemployed

  5. Inflation • Increase in prices and the decrease in purchasing power • Russia: Prices are 4,000,000 times higher • A-H: Prices are 23,000 times higher • Debt • All nations were in debt to someone • Most countries owed the U.S. Money and borrowed from others to pay it

  6. Political Instability • The only country with relative Stability was the U.S. • Most other major countries experienced a major shift in power following WW I • Ex: Russia becomes Communist; Germany becomes Nazi Socialist
