  1. 1 Star Chapter! Leslie Odom & Ashley Norwood

  2. First Thing’s First • While we may be presenting on the First star, it is certainly the most important, as it sets the foundation for all other stars! • The standards of the one star level emphasize the organization of the chapter and the orientation of members and advisors. • Are you ready to get started? • Here we go!

  3. Step one • Chapter officers and advisors review the Five Star Chapter Development Program requirements and determine a goal to reach within the year. • Remember to start off small!

  4. Step two • Set a goal for membership recruitment and develop strategies to meet this goal. • How will you grab the attention of potential members? Keep Phi Theta Kappa’s Mission Statement in mind. • "The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”

  5. Step Three • Chapter gains greater public awareness on campus by one or more of the following strategies: • Promoting the importance of membership to faculty • Posting membership brochures and flyers around their campus • Post CollegeFish.org and Competitive edge information around campus • Participate in “Phi Theta Kappa Founders Day” in November • Sending press release on new inductees (campus or community newspaper).

  6. Step Four • At the beginning of each semester in 2012 using PAM (the Personal Assistant Manager for Advisors), the chapter advisor opens an enrollment period. Chapters are encouraged to load a file of eligible students and allow online membership acceptance.

  7. Step Five • Your college president sends an invitation letter to eligible students encouraging them to join. • The letter should include invitation to a new member orientation, a Phi Theta Kappa Member Benefits Brochure, and information about the induction ceremony.

  8. Step Six • Promote membership acceptance by employing one or more of the following strategies: • Call eligible students • Email reminders linked to Membership Recruitment Brochure • Allow online membership acceptance • Hold one or more informational meeting(s)

  9. Step Seven • Chapter conducts an orientation for prospective members prior to induction. • This orientation allows members to get a better understanding about Phi Theta Kappa’s mission and the chapter’s individual participation in that mission.

  10. Step EIGHT • Chapter conducts at least one induction ceremony and report members’ names to Headquarters in 2012.

  11. Step Nine • Advisor submits the Chapter Annual Report to Headquarters. Chapter advisors will be notified when the report is available. • STEP TEN • Chapter’s bylaws are approved and on file with Headquarters.

  12. You got that? • We know it seems like a lot at first, but it isn’t hard to achieve! Once your chapter comes together, a 1 star chapter can easily be obtained. • Sit tight as we prepare for a Two Star Chapter!
