  1. The Challenges of Creating a WikiCommunity Asha S. Collins, Ph.D. AAAS/NIH Science and Technology Policy Fellow

  2. Outline • Overview of The Cancer Genome Atlas Pilot Project (TCGA) • Architecture and Needs of the Project • Incorporation of a Wiki • TCGA Wiki Features • Current State of TCGA Wiki

  3. The Pilot Project • Large, team science project to characterize the genomes of 3 cancers • Involves over 13 institutions • At least 3 biorepositories • 1 Biospecimen Processing Center • 3 Genomic Sequencing Centers • 7 Cancer Genomic Characterization Centers • 5 of the 7 using distinct analysis tools • 2 of the 7 using same analysis tool • Centralized Bioinformatics team • Standardization and integration of data

  4. Geographic Distribution

  5. Facilitating Multi-Node Science Considerations: • Large Group • Geographically dispersed • Performing specialized tasks • Specialized knowledge • Community Project Requires: • Coordinate Efforts • Enable standard vocabulary • Receive and respond to dynamic feedback • Ability to integrate feedback into process • Effective Communication and Collaboration Tool

  6. Facilitating Multi-Node Science National Cancer Institute’s Center for Bioinformatics’ (NCICB) GForge Additional Considerations: Rapid Implementation Economical

  7. Post documents • Edit documents • Online discussions • Organize Tasks Lists • Archive files (minutes, presentations, etc.) NCICB GForge • Open-Source Project Management and Collaboration Tool • Allows for plugins

  8. NCICB GForge Wiki phpwiki plug-in WikiWikiWeb clone

  9. GForge Wiki Activation

  10. NCICB GForge Wiki

  11. NCICB GForge Wiki Features: • No external resources required • Time: Rapid enabling • Create and edit documents • Requires registration • Create internal hyperlinks • Insert external hyperlinks • Insert images • Archives version history

  12. NCICB GForge Wiki Limitations: • Version history • No edit summary • Design modification • IP address-only identification • Tracking ability • Markup language

  13. GForge Wiki Activity Registered: December 2006 Current Usage Status: Low to none

  14. Obstacles for Users • Foreign Environment • Mandatory Registration • Minimal project specificity • Beginning of project • Utility

  15. Forging Forward w/GForge Document exclusivity Direct hyperlinks Increased data, increased usage Introduce medium at Project Meeting

  16. Overcoming Challenges of Creating a Wiki Community • Understanding the User • Previous Wiki experience • User Interface • Adoption • Adaptability • Realistic Expectations

  17. The Challenges of Creating a WikiCommunity Asha S. Collins, Ph.D. AAAS/NIH Science and Technology Policy Fellow
