  1. Opportunities For Learning Public Charter Schools PX2 Experience

  2. About Opportunities For Learning • Public Charter School established in 1999, by John and Joan Hall. Includes 5 charters in California, serving over 15,000 students each year. • Singularly focused on teenagers who are in danger of dropping out of school. • Our approach: • Guided independent, self-paced one-on-one directed learning • Environment free from negative distractions of a mega-school setting • Focus on state standards and continuous learning with more school days • Goal is to make sure all students earn a high school diploma • Inspire students to achieve their dreams through education • Experiential learning and intense focus on one or two courses at a time.

  3. Target Student • Middle and high school students who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out of traditional public schools • Students with behavioral issues in seat-time schools • Students behind in credits (Sixteen years old with freshmen credits, or students who are 20 units or less from being classified a senior) • Students who have not passed the Exit Exam • Students who have been expelled • Students who have been assigned to an alternative setting and did not show up • Socio-economically challenged students (60% of enrollment) • Pregnant and parenting teens (10% of enrollment) • Students who work full time • Students with health issues • Students who live in group foster homes • Homeless Students • Adjudicated students

  4. OFL and the Pacific Institute • 2005 - OFL partnered with the Pacific Institute for an Investment in Excellence seminar for OFL leadership. • 2008 – PX2 facilitator training for OFL leadership and teachers • On-going work for leadership development and the expansion of PX2 in our program

  5. OFL Student’s Backbone of Support

  6. The OFL Focus • Credit Recovery • CAHSEE passage • Proficiency in core classes and state testing • Achievement of a High School Diploma • Motivating and empowering students

  7. PX2 at OFL • OFL has run 15 sessions of PX2 within 3 charters • A total of 120 students have participated in PX2 • The purpose of running PX2 at OFL is to aid in dropout prevention, and help our Jr. and Senior students stay on track for graduation.

  8. The Results OFL Overall OFL PX2 Students • 100% (24 of 24) of the 12th graders who participated in PX2 are on track to graduate • All facilitators saw a positive change in 100% of the students who completed PX2

  9. The Feedback • Student Feedback: • “I think the most important part was when they discussed success…I believe if one is motivated enough and self willed, one can do anything.” • “I learned today that I can make it to wherever I want to be.” • “PX2 is a very helpful class. We learned about our feelings and thoughts an how they can stop us from succeeding. The mind can push us to complete a certain task but it can also intimidate us away from something that is too scary to face. PX2 kept me driven to complete my homework. Px2 made me think about my future.”

  10. The Feedback (continued) • Teacher Feedback: • “PX2 should definitely be a priority. No other class that we offer teaches students to be aware of their own thought process and ways to reshape and improve the way they interpret the world around them.” • “It’s an excellent tool to prepare students for adulthood.” • “PX2 gives students the information needed to make conscious decisions. Even when they are struggling to make the right decisions, they’re more aware of the consequences that will result from those decisions and the fact that they will get better results if they choose to do something rather than feeling like they have to do it. They didn’t have that clarity before.”

  11. Moving Forward • What we learned: • We need to develop a solid follow up for the students • Need to modify vocabulary including more real-life and relatable examples. • Future Use • OFL will continue to use PX2 as a dropout prevention with a focus on 11th and 12th graders who need extra motivation to make it to graduation. “My mind is thinking even when I’m not thinking.” PX2 Student Participant
