  2. Aids Foundation et AIDES AUC Volunteers • Aids Foundation: • Vision • St. Maarten AIDS Foundation is committed to eliminate new HIV infections as well as other STIs through comprehensive prevention education and behavior change programs, while securing universal access to care and treatment for all people living with HIV/AIDS in an environment free from stigma and discrimination • Missions • The St. Maarten AIDS Foundation seeks to prevent the transmission of HIV and other STIs and reduce their negative impact, including stigma and discrimination, while providing compassionate care, practical support services, and advocating on behalf of those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. • The St. Maarten AIDS Foundation is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization serving the population of Sint Maarten since 1990. Its objectives are to: • Promote awareness among the general population about the existence and risks of HIV, AIDS and STDs • Prevent HIV infection in the community via comprehensive educational and behavioral change programs • Prevent and reduce the possible negative social, economic and/or personal consequences of the HIV/AIDS-epidemic • Assist with the care and support for Persons Living with HIV and AIDS • .

  3. Aids Foundation et AIDES AUC Volunteers • The Foundation runs its programs along two pillars of Prevention and Care: • Under Prevention, the Foundation has for a number of years run educational workshops and outreach programs through schools, communities, businesses and faith-based organizations that promote awareness of HIV/AIDS, help assess risk factors and enable easy and rapid testing. • Girl Power, introduced in 2006, is one such program that has successfully armed teenage girls with practical knowledge, as well as self-empowerment and negotiation tools to effectively combat infection risks. • Study conducted on the island showed that secondary school students are at high risk for STI/HIV infection, due to various factors such as early initiation of sexual experiences, poor communication skills with adults, poor negotiation skills, lack of self efficacy and low risk perception. • The goal of the program is to change the behavior of adolescent female students in an attempt to decrease or stabilize the number of STI/HIV infections on the island. • Real Talk ,introduced in 2013 ,is 3-day workshop that is both knowledge- and skills-based, seeking to motivate young men to think about their life goals, build their self-awareness, manage peer pressure, and gain useful knowledge to successfully navigate decision-making and relationships to protect their health. • The Foundation is actively involved in treating people living with HIV and providing individual counseling and support to those individuals and family members who seek such assistance • .
