  3.  Your task • Study Alexander III’s manifesto. Are there many similarities / differences between his manifesto and that of his father?

  4.  Your task • Read Lynch, p. 19 and list the ways in which Alexander III turned his back on the reforms introduced by his father.

  5. The Reaction • ‘The Reaction’ – term for Alexander’s measures in aftermath of assassination • Assassins tried & executed • 1881, Statute of State Security increased govt. powers • Govt.-controlled courts • Powers of Okhrana extended • Censorship tightened • University Statute, 1887, tightened controls over universities • Zemstva Act, 1890 decreased independence of local councils

  6.  Your task • List ways in which ‘russification’ helped to strengthen Alexander’s control over national minorities. • What impact did the policy have on the Jewish community?

  7. Russification • Russian declared 1st official language • Greater importance attached to Russian cultural values • More open discrimination • State interference in education, religion and admin. • Baltic Germans, Poles, Finns, Armenians & Ukranians suffered most

Russians Jews • Pogroms against Jews • Jews used as scapegoats diverting attention from govt failings • Black Hundreds – ultra-conservative Russian nationalists led attacks • 600+ measures restricting activities of Russian Jews • Jewish community became politicised & in 1897 formed revolutionary ‘Bund’ or union

  9.  Your task • Imagine you are a moderate supporter of the tsars. Write an open letter expressing your support for some of the changes introduced by Alexander II, but also expressing your concern over ‘The Reaction’ of his son.

  10.  Plenary • How accurate is the view that Alexander II was the great reformer and his son Alexander III was a great reactionary?
