  1. Nature of Science Part 1 Indian Trails Middle School

  2. Are all scientists the same?

  3. Are all scientists are old, white men who work alone in laboratories?

  4. Scientists are Diverse and Work Together

  5. Do ideas change?

  6. 3 Observations 2 Inferences 1 Prediction

  7. Science affects your life everyday in all sorts of different ways. • Science can be fun and is accessible to everyone. • You can apply an understanding of how science works to your everyday life. • Anyone can become a scientist — of the amateur or professional variety. • Science affects your life everyday in all sorts of • different ways. • Science can be fun and is accessible to everyone. • You can apply an understanding of how science • works to your everyday life. • Anyone can become a scientist — of the amateur • or professional variety.

  8. Science focuses exclusively on the natural world, and does not deal with supernatural explanations. Science can study such natural things as bridge engineering, artificial sweeteners, robots, the stock market, the human smile, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology.

  9. “Psuedoscience” is NOT science Supernatural phenomena like ghosts, fortune-telling and astrology can’t be tested, so it is NOT in the realm of a scientist’s work.

  10. Accepted scientific ideas are reliable because they have been subjected to rigorous testing, but as new evidence is acquired ideas change!

  11. Adiversescientificcommunityoffersabroadrangeof perspectivesthatleadstogreater understanding ofthenaturalworld.

  12. Scientists work in many different ways, but all science relies on testing ideas making observations to find out whether those are valid.

  13. How do scientists conduct investigations? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NzgPNpQkno

  14. Missing Person Alert • A missing person’s report has been filed with the CSI team. Unfortunately, little is known about the missing person because all photos and records were destroyed in a fire…..except for a pile of checks that were stored in a metal box. • The CSI team needs your help to identify the person and the circumstances that led to the disappearance. • Carefully examine each of the checks for clues. Create a Missing Person Poster that provides enough information so that the person can be identified and found. The information you provide MUST be backed by the evidence collected on the checks.

  15. Missing Person Poster Activity Your poster must include: - A picture - DOB (Date of birth) - Gender - Race - Height - Weight - Eye color - Identifying Features: ( scars, tattoos, etc) - Additional Details/Circumstances of the disappearance ***Attach your evidence log to the back of the poster JOURNAL ENTRY: Scrutinize the evidence collected by a different team. Identify one piece of evidence that you feel has been misinterpreted. Explain why you think the team has drawn a wrong conclusion.

  16. FCAT Practice Problem # 1 Melanie and Brody want to find out whether wooden bats or metal bats allow baseballs to travel farther. Melanie asks five different people to hit ten balls with each type of bat and she measures the distance each ball travels. Brody researches the physical properties of the pine wood and the aluminum metal and then estimates the possible distance a ball could travel with a given force. Which student conducted an experiment? Explain why.

  17. FCAT Practice Problem #2 Scientific knowledge may change as new evidence or information is discovered. Which of the following would NOT be a result of new scientific research and information? • Binomial nomenclature is assigned to a recently identified plant species. • An endangered monkey species is put in a reserve for protection from extinction. • A newly discovered chemical element will be added to the periodic table of elements. • A nonnative plant species will begin to reproduce rapidly after being introduced into a swamp ecosystem.

  18. FCAT Practice Problem # 3 Which statement best summarizes the development of the atomic theory over time? • Advancements in atomic models proved the atomic theory was accurate. • The discovery of new evidence resulted in changes to the atomic theory. • With the discovery of every new element, the atomic theory was modified. • Changes in atomic models showed that the atomic theory was based on opinion.
