  1. MULTIPLE GPS SIGNAL AND GNSS CONSTELLATION TESTING Mark Holbrow Assisted by: Dr. Philips Mattos (STMicroelectronics)

  2. Session Objectives • Review of Supported Signals • GPS, Glonass, Galileo, Compass (forthcoming), IRNSS, QZSS • Multi-Constellation Testing • Hardware Solutions

  3. Signal Review - GPS

  4. GPS Modernisation Schedule • Second civil signal L2C • Designed to meet commercial / scientific needs • Higher accuracy through ionospheric correction • 1st launch: Sep 2006 (IIR-M); 24 satellites: ~2016 • Third civil signal L5 • Designed to meet demanding requirements for safety-of-life • 1st launch: Mar 2009 (IIR-M / IIF); 24 satellites: ~2018 • Fourth civil signal “L1C” • Designed with partners for GNSS interoperability • Begins with Block III • 1st launch: ~2014; 24 satellites: ~2021

  5. Signal Review - GLONASS Old Signal L1 New Signal Old Signal L2 New Signal New Signal L3, L5

  6. GLONASS Signal Modernisation FDMA CDMA

  7. Signal Review - GALILEO

  8. Galileo Signals

  9. Signal Overview – Compass (2012 Roadmap)

  10. Compass CPII – B1, B2, B3

  11. Compass CPIII – B1, B2, B3

  12. Signal Overview - QZSS L1C BOC (1,1) L1C TMBOC L1CA/SAIF L5 L2C

  13. QZSS Signals

  14. Signal Overview - IRNSS L5 S Band

  15. IRNSS - Signals

  16. GNSS Frequency

  17. Multi-Constellation Testing – Why? • GPS / GLONASS receivers have been available for some years • Work to integrate GLONASS into personal devices, e.g. Iphone 4S, Garmin eTrex • GPS / Galileo receivers are available now • Septentrio AsteRx1 • GPS/GLO/GAL receivers is a reality • Javad Delta, Septentrio AsteRx3, Novatel FlexPak6, Trimble R8 GNSS

  18. Benefits of GNSS • More satellites • Greater SV visibility (urban cannon) and hence DOP advantages • Greater integrity from SV failure or service outage • Exploits the advantages of each system, e.g. • GPS and GLONASS actually exist • Improved performance at northern latitudes with Galileo • Higher reliability • Inter-system RAIM • Less vulnerable to interference • Slim chance of multiband interferer co-exist

  19. London Financial District May 2011

  20. Canary Wharf Blue : GNSS (patch) Green : GPS only(linear)

  21. GNSS = more satellites • Blue = GNSS • GPS+GLONASS • Plenty of sats • Red = GPS only • 3 sats example • Circular Polarised Antenna • Green = GPS only • Linear antenna • Accepts reflections • On this occasion, beneficial

  22. Multi Constellation GPS + Glonass GPS GPS+GLO

  23. Multi Constellation GPS + QZSS GPS GPS+QZSS

  24. Multi-Constellation Testing - Choice • SimGEN antenna types

  25. Multi-Constellation Testing - Choice • Location : Spirent UK • Total 32 satellites in view • 3 EGNOS, 9 GPS, 8 GLO, 10 GAL, 2 IRNSS

  26. Hardware Solutions – Single Chassis • GSS8000 offers wide range of constellation / carrier options from a single chassis • Standard single antenna chassis offering (4 / 8 / 12 / 16 channels per carrier)

  27. Hardware Solutions – Single Chassis • GSS8000 dual antenna chassis offers • DGPS operation • GTx support (Embedded Interference) (4 / 8 / 12 channels per carrier)

  28. Hardware Solutions – Dual Chassis • Support more carriers across multiple constellations • Master unit timing signals connected directly Note compatibility with earlier GSS7*** units MCU now standard solution. Previously RF routed through master unit

  29. Hardware Solutions – Multi Chassis Master unit timing signals via distribution unit

  30. Hardware Solutions – Expansion • Increase your number of channels (in-field upgrade) • Grow your system (factory upgrade) • Add extra carrier(s) to existing GSS8000 chassis • Add extra GSS8000 chassis (+ MCU, and distribution) • Add interference (+ ICU) • Add SimINERTIAL • Add LAAS • Add remote control
