  1. Lab Equipment and Measurements

  2. Graduated Cylinder • Measures volume of liquids • Unit: liter (L) • Commonly use mL in lab • Proper Procedure: Place cylinder on a flat surface, get at eye level with the liquid, and read the bottom of the miniscus, the curved part of the top of the liquid.

  3. Correct Technique!

  4. Meniscus

  5. Practice

  6. Beaker • Can be used to measure large volumes, but not as accurate as a graduated cylinder • Mainly used for pouring and mixing • Unit: mL

  7. Triple-Beam Balance • Measures mass (amount of substance – how much) • Unit: gram (g) • Procedure: Place balance on a flat surface, adjust masses until the arm balances. Take the sum of the 3 masses.

  8. Practice!

  9. More Practice!

  10. Spring Scale • Measures weight (the force of the pull of gravity on a substance) • Unit: Newton (N)

  11. Look more familiar?

  12. Meterstick or Ruler • Measures distance or length • Unit: meter (m), or cm (centimeter) in the lab

  13. Practice!

  14. Thermometer • Measures temperature • Unit: Kelvin (K) or °Celcius (°C) • What do you think would be the “proper procedure” for reading a thermometer?

  15. Stopwatch or Timer • Measures: time • Unit: seconds (s)

  16. Other Equipment • Test tube • Funnel • Bunsen burner • Test tube clamp

  17. Other Equipment (cont.) • Ring stand • Erlenmeyer flask

  18. Dissection Equipment • Forceps • Teasing needle • Probe and seeker • Scalpel

  19. IMPORTANT Prefixes Foldable • Kathy Has Dirty Underwear, Don’t Check Mine! • kilo = 1000 • hecto = 100 • deca = 10 • Basic unit • deci = 1/10 = 0.1 • centi = 1/100 = 0.01 • milli = 1/1000 = 0.001
