Who is Mr Burnett? • This will be my 16th year teaching • I started here at Lee (2nd Grade) • Masters at Pepperdine University • B.B.A. at University of San Diego. • I take a developmental approach to teaching which includes cognitive, emotional, and social development. • Born and raised in Rossmoor.

Ways to Communicate With Me • EMAIL - cburnett@losal.org – please make sure you are on my email list as well. • Send a note with your child • Phone Message (562)799-4540 x73119 • Schedule a meeting • **Please do not just drop in to have an unscheduled meeting before school as I am usually busy preparing for the day.

  5. CAMP B • Student Created- classroom pride and unity • Teaches Responsibility- Homework, behavior, jobs, money management, and businesses. • Positive motivation • Math driven- critical thinking and math throughout our society • Social Studies- It will change to simulate American History throughout the year • Aspects include currency, flag, jobs, pledge, jobs and business day

Language Arts • Houghton Mifflin Reading Series • Reader’s Workshop • Reading Log – Initial every day • Accelerated Reader • Leveled books • Novels will be used for Literature Circles and to help them gain a better understanding of Historical Events. • Writing- step up to writing/Writer’s Workshop • Multi paragraph essays, Persuasive Letters, Research Reports, and Narrative Story are the 5th grade essential writings • Grammar and Spelling is incorporated into daily writing and weekly lessons

Math • CGI – Cognitive Guided Instruction • Houghton Mifflin Math Series • Jiji math in computer lab • Hand on Equations • Need to know and practice multiplication facts! • Some topics covered: (level of difficulty will increase from past years) Multiplication, Division, Fractions and Decimals, Geometry, Algebra, and Percents.

  8. Social Studies • American History • Text on Internet • States and Capitals • Early American Cultures • Discovery /Exploration • Colonial Times • Revolutionary War • Government • Westward Expansion

  9. Science • Earth Science - Weather and Space • Life Science - Systems of Living Things and plants • Physical Science - Energy and Matter, Elements and Periodic Table • Family Life/ Too Good For Drugs • Outdoor Science School • January 14th – 18th

Daily Schedule • 7:50- 8:05-DOL (daily language review/spelling) and Homework Check • 8:05- 9:00- Reader’s Workshop • 9:05- 10:00-Writer’s Workshop/ Grammar • 9:50- 10:05- Recess • 10:05- 11:15- Math • 11:15 – 12:00 Social Studies/Science • 12:10- 12:55- Lunch • 12:45-2:00- Social Studies/Science • 2:00- 2:10- Closing and Minder Binders

  11. Special Times • Monday- • Book check out /computer time 9:05 – 9:50 • Tuesday- • PE/and or mile run • Jiji/Computers 11:05 • Wednesday- • Rotations 8:05 – 12:00 • Spanish 11:40 – 12:10 • Early Release @ 1:10 • Friday – • PE 1:20–2:10 (All 5th Grade)

  13. Homework - Your involvement 1. Creating the right environment * place *lighting *schedule- habit 2. Look in the Minder Binder *to check if they have completed all their homework *if they have worked for 1 hour and 30 minutes (focused) and have not finished please stop them and write me a note. *Let me know- parent/teacher notes in agenda *Please remind your child to put their homework in their backpack right after you check it. 3. On the Lee Website: www.losal.org/lee (go to Lee, teachers, cburnett) 4. Observe any needs for homework adjustment

Homework • Assignments Given Daily – Some are due the next day, others later in the week • Students must walk through the door with their homework complete – They will not be allowed to call home for forgotten work • LATE WORK/REDOS – Will be accepted but there score will be lowered by 10% (Max of 89%) • STAR BULLETINS Go home on Mondays and are due every Tuesday! • Homework will be posted on the website, but do not rely on this as students must write in their Minder Binders

  16. Star Club • Class Management system • Sign and return the yellow slip • Receive slips for behavior and missing assignments • Fresh start every day • STAR Bulletins go home on Mondays • Fun Fridays - every 4 weeks

  17. Field Trips • Riley’s Farm –Revolutionary War • Usually parent funded in addition to PTA Funds • Usually in the Spring • Outdoor Science School-Jan. 6-10

  18. Outdoor Science School • February 6th – 10th • Camp Nawakwa (www.thehightrailsway.com) or(www.dirtyclassroom.com) • Information letter in Folder • Parent Meeting October 2nd @ 6:30 in the Media Center • Intent Slip due by next Friday, the 20th. NEXT FRIDAY!

Project LEAP • Would love to see all of the parents there! • Event is scheduled November 16th (***May Change) • Donations being accepted – (Child will receive a “grab bag” full of prizes) • Grocery Club Registration • Need Volunteers to help with the event • Teachers will be auctioning off some activities with the kids.
