  2. Description Why read the Sonnets? Because of the way Shakespeare’s brain works. His neural wiring may just rub off a bit and rewire your brain’s ability to think and to write. Yes, the way Shakespeare’s brain functions may ‘infect’ your brain. I suspect that this is not the answer you were expecting. I have a theory that poetry ‘transmits’ the way a mind thinks across time. Why? Because of the use of metaphor. Words are containers of meaning. So, new thoughts require new containers. Poets create new meanings with which to think. This brings us back to metaphor.Shakespeare packs his sonnets with metaphors. He thinks in metaphors. New and startling meanings emerge nonstop from his mind. He is also unafraid to use mixed metaphors. This is when we use two or more metaphors in rapid succession to overlap one with another, and so, create a complex compound metaphor. Shakespeare pushes these to the breaking point. You can feel his mind struggling to find containers to carry his thinking. The points at which he struggles are the points at which his metaphors break.Returning to the sonnets today, I can say that they have lost none of their startlement. But it is the influence of his work on all other writers, right into this very moment, that continues most to amaze. I challenge you to even try to name how many novels, plays, films, operas, songs, mangas, EPs, bands, perfumes, clothing brands, boats, cars, airplanes, consumer electronics, eateries, wines, foods, plants, et cetera, that take their names and titles from lines of Shakespeare’s works. Such enumeration rapidly flabbergasts. Yes, the sonnet today is as vibrantly alive as it always has been.
