Crane Collapse at Castle Hill: A Miraculous Escapade

On a fateful Friday morning on 26/09/08 at Castle Hill, Sydney, a 9-day-old $4 million 250t Leibherr crane - never used before - suffered a catastrophic failure. The incident occurred due to the failure of back propping beneath a 200mm thick concrete deck, causing the crane outrigger to punch through the slab. The crane lost balance and collapsed across the site and onto an adjoining property after being suspended in the air for approximately one hour. Miraculously, there were no serious injuries or fatalities.
