Clear & Distinct Ideas • Knows that he, “a thinking thing”, exists. • Believes he exists because it is so “clearly and distinctly” so – this is what makes “the cogito” so hard to reject. • Accepts that whatever else seems to be so “clear and distinct” will also be reliable, acceptable as knowledge. • Distinguishes between ideas in the mind – Factitious (D), Adventitious (D) and Innate (Ind). • God is an innate idea. • “Consequently it seems to me that I can already establish as a general rule that all the things we conceive very clearly and distinctly are true.” 3rd Meditation.

Proving God.Trademark Argument • Descartes establishes the “causal adequacy principle”. • This means that whatever causes something to be must be greater than the effect or at least have “ as much reality”. • So if the innate idea of God is the effect the cause cannot be less than the reality of God. • He rejects other potential sources of his existence – parents, himself, something less perfect than God. • Idea of God is the makers trademark in us.
