  2. Weimer Constitution • Positives: Guaranteed civil liberties, direct elections of govt officials. • Negatives: President had power to remove officials, creating a presidential dictatorship.

  3. Kapp Putsch • Armed insurrection erupts in Berlin in 1920- failed.

  4. Problems • Strikes in the Ruhr Region. • Allied forces threaten to occupy Germany. • Violence against Republican leaders in govt. • Owed 132 billion in gold marks to Allies

  5. Inflation • Deficit spending leads to value drop of German currency. • 1914- 4.2:1 ratio vs. U.S. dollar • 1921- 64:1 • 1923- 800,000,000:1

  6. Adolf Hitler • Hated Marxism which he associated with the Jews. • Extremely nationalistic • Very Racist

  7. Early Life • Adolf Hitler fought in the German army • Awarded the Iron Cross for bravery. • Became associated w/ Nazi Party, which was very small in 1920.

  8. Popularity of the Nazis • Supported by all facets after the issuance of the 25 Points.

  9. SA • “Storm troopers” headed by Ernst Roehm

  10. Beer Hall Putsch • Attempted coup, failed. • 16 Nazis killed. • Hitler and Ludendorff arrested. • Received 5 years in prison, only spent 3 months

  11. Mein Kampf • “My Struggle” • Autobiography which outlined his anti-Semitic views, anti-Marxist, and goals for Germany

  12. Locarno Agreements of 1925 • France, German- western borders agreed upon • German membership to League of Nations • Eastern German border- still vague and open to interpretation (which will lead to problems prior to WWII)
