  1. Metadata Management Tool (MMT) Improving biodiversity information accessibility

  2. Description THE CHM METADATA MANAGEMENT TOOL (MMT) MANAGES NATIONAL CHMs METADATA -HTTP://METATOOL.BIODIVERSITY.BG/ Indexing, Searching, Presenting

  3. Structure

  4. PUBLIC PART It allows users to search the metadata by: country, language, category (the main categories in the CHM: news, legislation, education, scientific information etc…) and keywords. Web address:http://metatool.biodiversity.bg/search.cfm

  5. ADMINISTRATIVE PART - general administration The general administrator manages the whole service. For the moment this is the Bulgarian CHM but it could be changed, depending on the agreements. The general administrator can add, edit and delete: users (information nodes), categories, languages, countries and metafiles. Web address:http://metatool.biodiversity.bg/generaladmin/index.cfm

  6. ADMINISTRATIVE PART - node administration. Services • Setting up an account. • Registering metadata. • Changing details • Listing uploaded metafiles • Listing links

  7. REGISTERING METADATA – upload to the central server The MMT allows parties (IN) to upload their metadata (RDF) to the central server • File by file; • Uploading a bunch of RDF files (.ZIP) ; • Remote indexing of HTMLs.

  8. REGISTERING METADATA - remote indexing of metadata (RDF) This service is used for: (a) indexing and searching throughout metadata (RDF) on a remote server, (b) visualizing the search results on the MMT interface or another one. - It should be defined the access to data; - It should be defined the protocol for exchange; - Setting up the web service and the connection

  9. Web service • The already established web service allows: • a search box could be placed on every national CHM web site, allowing searching in all other CHMs; • searching of metadata (RDF).

  10. Network Central server (central node), remote servers (information nodes (IN) – national CHMs) MMT Central server (central search interface) Remote server IN – 1 (additional search interface) Remote server IN – 2(additional search interface) Remote server IN – 3 (additional search interface)

  11. Technologies , platforms and languages Cold Fusion, SOAP, HTML, Java

  12. Testing the service. Operating as national node administrator. User name: paffka Password: paffka

  13. Metadata (RDF) MMT doesn’t include generating RDF, except when submitting links (see the service). Each national CHM has to do this by itself. Generating RDF files depends on the applications used by parties and it is subject of another presentation.

  14. Conclusions The MMT can be used for: • Managing national CHM metadata (RDF) - every country their own; • Managing national CHM metadata (RDF) through adding metadata to the central server; • Establishment of a GBIF - similar network with the help of the remote indexing and searching of metadata (RDF).
