North Africa • Area primarily covered in desert. • In order to grow crops people must irrigate their fields • In Egypt, there is an oasis, that allows for some crops to be grown • Oasis – a fertile spot in the desert where water is found. • Niger has subsistencefarmingand grows grains • subsistencefarming– farming where most of what is grown is consumed by the farmer and family. Leave little to sell • The more rainfall this region has, the more crops • More water = more crops Subsistence Farming

North Africa continued.. • Morocco grows barley and wheat • Libya and Algeria have large amounts of petroleum • Nomadicherdingis a common way of living in North Africa • bringing individual animals together into a group (herd), maintaining the group and moving the group from place to place • Remember – a nomad is a desert wanderer

  5. Aswan High Dam • Located on the Nile River • Built to prevent the annual flooding of the Nile. • Also built to provide farmers with irrigation • Created hydroelectric power

East Africa • Nomadic herding • What is this? • Farmers in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, grow tea and coffee as a cashcrop • A crop grown to sell • Trees are an important resource so people can cut them down and sell them as exports • But do they really want to cut them down? • What does cutting down the trees do?

  10. Tropical Rainforest • Gum, rubber, Kola-nuts, palm oil • The forests primary resource is commercial timber • Deforestation is becoming a growing problem • WHY?! • Over 8,500 rare plant species and animals • At risk for being endangered and hunted • There are many diverse fruits

  11. The Kola-Nut is a unique and common symbol in many Nigerian tribes. Bitter taste and highly caffeinated Medicinal purposes, cuisine item, spiritual ceremonies

West Africa • Ghana and Cameroon have major cash crops of cocoa and coffee • Nigeria is a major oil producer • Oil = $$$$ (remember??) • Raising livestock and fishing are important for families • Ghana was once called the “Gold Coast” • African gold, copper, silver, uranium, titanium, and diamonds

  16. Land used for Livestock raising and Commercial Farming • Resources include: diamonds, coal, uranium, iron ore, zinc, and other gems • This region also provides an important resource –hydroelectric power South Africa

  18. Blood Diamonds • Known as conflict diamonds • Refers to a diamond mined in a war zone • Sold to finance the invading army’s war efforts (pays for their war) • Africa is known for two-thirds of the world’s diamond extractions Panning for Diamonds in Sierra Leone

  20. Throughout all of Africa… • Variety of crops • Farming is a MAJOR part of Africa’s economy • Raw materials • Manufactured goods • Mining • People move to cities to apply for jobs in factories
