Receive Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 2, verses 27 to 32

  5. Engage The account of Jesus being brought as a baby to the Temple appears in the Gospel of Luke (Chapter 2, verses 22 to 38). At the Temple two devout people proclaimed that this child is the Christ, the Messiah, their names were Simeon and Anna. Today many Christians celebrate this event on the 2nd February and it is often called ‘Candlemas’. This name came from the time when the candles that were to be used in the church for the coming year were blessed at a special celebration.
