  2. History • The Ottoman Empire ruled the area that is now Turkey and more. • It is located in Europe and Asia. • Minorities living in the empire were treated poorly.

  3. Armenians in the Ottoman Empire • In 1908, a group called the Young Turks took over control of the government. • They were ultra-nationalistic. • They wanted to make a pure Turkish nation. • They were not successful militarily.

Armenians in the Ottoman Empire • Armenians were treated poorly by the Young Turks. • In April 1915, the Ottoman authorities arrested 250 Armenian people. • They forced them to walk hundreds of miles without rest or food or water. • Most of them died. • This is recognized as the date of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide.

  5. Genocide • Genocide means: destruction of an ethnic group. • It is the purposeful attempt to destroy all members of a group. An article by the New York Times dated 15 December 1915 states that one million Armenians had been either deported or executed by the Ottoman government.

  6. Armenian Genocide • The Ottoman destruction of the Armenians is one of the first modern genocides. • The word genocide was newly added to the English language to describe these events. Interior Minister Talaat Pasha, who ordered the arrests.

  7. Genocide? • The modern country of Turkey denies that a genocide occurred. • It has troubled relations with Armenia and complicated the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
