  4. Who Supplies StFX SODEXO? • Approved vendors with liability insurance • Federal inspection (especially for meat products) • Conform to their standards/specifications • Uninterrupted timely supplies (free of delivery and infrastructure problems) SYSCO – Moncton, Halifax is the main Sodexo supplier

  5. Does SODEXO buy food locally? Subject to the definition of local, SYSCO – StFXSodexo mail supplier, claims 32% of its supplies to StFXSodexoin 2012 are from Nova Scotia not Antigonish per se.

  6. SODEXO Motivation for buying locally Apart from local foods being fresh, tastier, and relatively safety hence no long transportation and storage is involved, why do you buy local produce? • To boost local economy as done for their lobster supplies (May – June) from Ballantines Fishermen Co-operative and Milk supplies from Scotsburn, New Glasgow

  7. Challenges at buying locally • Local farmers inability to meet Sodexo demand in terms of frequency and quantity hence • Local farming is seasonal while Sodexo demands are all year round with its peak season being Sept. – April • Stringent regulations/procedures to be adhered to as stated earlier, making it impossible • Buying supplies from just anyone • Liability Insurance

  8. Way Forward for Local Suppliers • Ensure all year round uninterrupted supplies • Obtain liability insurance • Be approved vendors • Have infrastructure (transport + cold storage) to ensure timely delivery supplies • Federally inspection for meat products

  9. Key Recommendation for Local Suppliers • Form a Farmers Producer Co-operative like SYSCO that would serve as a one-stop shop for StFXSodexo • Form an alliance with MNCs so that local produce are bought during the farming season and imported only where not locally available • They need Green Houses in order to extend the planting season in the locality • Focus on households where MNC demand can’t be met Key Recommendation for Government • Award tax incentives to Companies as per the quantity of local produce they buy
