  9. founder and director: Nina Meyerhof Born in New York, Nina has had a lifelong interest in international affairs. Her parents fled Germany before WWII and developed ties to Switzerland. There she attended the School of the Humanities, an experience which inspired her approach to her summer programs for children at Heart’s Bend.

  10. OPENING HEARTS, OPENING MINDS 32 participants under twenty years of age came from 21 countries to the World Seminar for Children which Nina planned and organized in 1990. They were all inspired by a passionate desire to commit their lives to World Peace. They recognized themselves in one another, in spite of cultural extremes and other differences among them. During the week at Heart’s Bend there was a remarkable sense of unity: a shared purpose based on a common love for life, ALL LIFE. They were brothers and sisters, children of the earth; their hearts and minds were open. They were ONE.

  11. 1990 World Seminar at Heart’s Bend

  12. Following is the text of a document co-authored by the children. The Children’s Declaration for Peace

  13. In the name of love, unity and harmony, we, the children of the world, declare that now is the time for peace. As creators of a better tomorrow, we envision social and environmental equilibrium, individual and international co-operation and the fulfillment of human potential as global goals.

  14. To achieve equilibrium, education must be available to all. This education should not only include academic, but also personal, moral and spiritual development. With this education, we can increase our awareness of global problems and develop our ability to solve them. The freedom accorded to all people through education shall be accompanied by the responsibility that will serve to bridge the gaps between economic, religious, material, political and cultural extremes.

  15. As part of the earth’s living system, our harmonious co-existence with nature is essential for the sustainability of humanity. We pledge our support to the United Nations. However, we also stress the need for a more equitable distribution of power to all countries to encourage the evolution of peace. We desire self-determination for all people and hope that the emerging leaders guide rather than govern.

  16. We, the children, as one of the world’s greatest untapped resources, accept the responsibility to further the love, unity and harmony which exist in peace.

  17. The logo for the organization was created by participants at the 1991 Children’s World Summit Response at Heart’s Bend.

  18. The design of the logo is based on a traditional spiritual concept suggested by native American youth, the “Medicine Wheel.”

  19. Each quadrant of a “Medicine Wheel” signifies one of the four cardinal directions.

  20. A green circle in the center of the logo represents the earth. The different colored circles surrounding it stand for certain powerful spirits encountered in nature.

  21. All are encircled by a layer of blue, the sky, incorporating four pairs of children’s hands in four different colors representing the four races.

  22. The logo celebrates unity and diversity, honors spirituality, recognizes the interdependence of all life, and expresses human sensitivity and caring.

  25. The WORLD SPIRIT YOUTH COUNCILwas conceived at AROSA, SWITZERLAND, January, 2005 Because the 15 youth shared a passionate belief in the need for an organized movement of youth who live INNER PEACE, under the sponsorship of Children of the Earth the World Spirit Youth Council was organized to meet that need. 15 individual youth came to participate in the WSF World Spirit Forum in Arosa. They discovered that they had been drawn to the Forum through a common realization: Spiritual transformation is essential to effective peacemaking in the world.

  30. GOI PEACE FOUNDATION Though unknown to one another at the time of establishment, the GOI PEACE FOUNDATION and CHILDREN OF THE EARTH have much in common. Geographically they began worlds apart, yet their simultaneous development of very similar principles and practices seems to demonstrate parallel evolution of consciousness.

  31. GOI PEACE FOUNDATION Masahisa Goi (1916-1980), a Japanese teacher, philosopher, poet and author, dedicated his life to peace and humanity. After witnessing the terrible destruction of the Second World War, he started a world peace movement to spread the message and prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” as a way of uniting the hearts of humanity transcending all boundaries of race, religion, or politics.

  32. GOI PEACE FOUNDATION The World Peace Prayer Society inspired by Masahisa Goi was incorporated in New York in 1988 and in 1990 became an NGO of the UN. It was in this very time period that CHILDREN OF THE EARTH received the same official status. The Goi Peace Foundation which shares projects and networks with the World Peace Prayer Society was established in Tokyo in 1999 in conjunction with the UN declaring 2000 as the International Year for the Culture of Peace.

  33. Creating a New Civilization WSYC members, during a special 3-day conference at the 2006 Goi Peace Forum in Tokyo, exchanged visions and wisdom with over 100 international youth. They developed action plans to co-create a sustainable and harmonious civilization based on spiritual values and reverence for all life on Earth. An International Youth Network was launched.

  34. Goi Peace Forum’s 4-S Cycle ~ a model for creating a new civilization in which sustainability is imperative and spirituality has a foundational role.

  35. FORM and MISSION CHILDREN OF THE EARTH was created in recognition of the rights of children; its mission is to enable them to actively participate in the development of a more peaceful and caring global society.

  36. FORM and MISSION The organizational principles of the WORLD SPIRIT YOUTH COUNCIL have been intentionally modeled after the self-organizing principles of life process. The integrity of the whole is determined by the condition of each one of its participants. Global peace is determined by individual personal peace. The regional INITIATIVE IN NEPAL nourished individual spirituality and prepared the group for participation in the GOI PEACE FORUM where the focus was on creating a new sustainable civilization.

WSYC Members Shelter Under the Branches of the Great TREE OF PEACE The ancestors of the people of the Six Nations were the first human inhabitants of the eastern part of North America (Turtle Island). These people, known as Haudenosaunee, are the oldest living participatory democracy on earth. They have for over eight centuries practiced governance based on the consent of the governed AND with a spiritual awareness that everything is connected, that all living beings are related, that all life is One Life.
