Testing and Evaluation of LH Protection System with Enhanced Power and Duration

The LH experiment aims to test the protection system using RINT/FINT ratios while increasing LH power and duration. In run 1060406, bugs were identified in the protection system, necessitating lengthy cell access; however, the system showed some effectiveness, and the method appears promising for arc protection. In run 1060413, we tested the system again, initially using 5 ms pulses, but encountered a fault due to body current. We adjusted the power and observed improved coupling, achieving the highest recorded power of 370 kW with a duration of 40 ms.

LH Experiment Summary 1060406 • Run 1060406 Goals: • Test protection system- RINT/FINT ratios • Increase LH power and duration • Look for evidence of current drive • Run 1060406 Results: • Bugs were found with the protection system, requiring lengthy cell accesses. The protection system worked some of the time, the reasons for failure were found and the method seems promising for arc protection. • Coupling study was continued with remaining 3 shots. Pushed in to a position ~1mm behind limiter and observed better coupling.

Run Summary for 1060413 • Run 1060413 Goals: • Test protection system, and restrike • Increase LH power and duration • Look for evidence of current drive • Started of with 5 ms pulses to check protection system • First fault due to body current at 80kW/klystron. • Backed power down to 70 kW/klystron, protection system worked so the pulse length was extended. Increased duration until a slow periodic structure was observed on the reflected power. • The oscillation was intermittent, but at levels high enough to cause a trip if we had protection on the jungle gym. Lowered power and used ramps.
