  1. Top 10 Issues in MSN (A rather high-level view)

  2. gLite • gLite • Much recent discussion • See Stephen Burke’s talk later on • Is gLite sufficient ? • LCFGng/Quattor • SRM, dCache • OGSA-DAI • … The MSN Top 10

  3. Life on the Grid • Being productive in a less than perfect Grid • Site configuration errors, black holes, etc. • Imperfect middleware (fault tolerance, errors,..) • Imperfect grid information • Cycle time to fix bugs on the grid • Sysadmins wish to minimise updates • Users want bugs fixed quickly (and properly) • Fixing/testing/certification/deployment cycle The MSN Top 10

  4. Engagement Between developers, providers, users Can we do better ? Communication Between developers, providers, users Can we do better ? Duplication “Incremental improvement”, OR Natural selection & evolution, OR Wasted effort Security Do we understand what sort of policies we need to support in M/W Sociology The MSN Top 10

  5. Life after GridPP2 • Middleware Support • Operational support, new releases, updates (security), etc. • Middleware Development • New functionality : will we have all requirements understood and met by 2007 ? The MSN Top 10

  6. We’re not alone “According to the latest Web services "hype cycle" from Gartner, both Web services security standards and the deployment of Web services with security are rushing headlong into the dreaded "Trough of Disillusionment." This means that the greatest levels of hype in these areas are supposedly behind us and the reality of just what can and cannot be done is collectively dawning on us. Taken at face value, this news could be either good or bad. The good news could be that now that the hype is over and we have passed the lofty "Peak of Inflated Expectations," we can all get down to the serious work of putting together workable security solutions and solid security standards to help bring Web services to where they deserve to be. The bad news could be the security components of Web services getting mired in the "Trough of Disillusionment" for too long and losing their appeal for the enterprise.” Michael Mosher, Web Services Journal, Oct 2004. The MSN Top 10

  7. Hype ? Where you sit depends on your role ! (Gartner) Hype Curve for some new technologies ~2001 The MSN Top 10

  8. Issues/Questions What can GridPP2 improve in MSN to try to make a (big) difference ? • gLite • Is gLite enough ? • How can you be productive in a less than perfect Grid ? • Is the cycle time to fix bugs far too long ? • Are users, providers and developers really engaged ? • Are users, providers and developers communicating effectively ? • Is duplication necessary / avoidable ? • Do we really understand security policy implications on middleware ? • After GridPP2, what shape should middleware support take ? • After GridPP2, what shape should middleware development take ? The MSN Top 10

  9. The End Not really 10 points, since gLite is really the bulk of many MSN issues !! The MSN Top 10
