  1. Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG, 29 August - 2 September 2011, Belgrade) Update on preparations and proposed document schedule

  2. We are writing to provide you with an update on our meeting preparations and proposed document schedule for the meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG, 29 August - 2 September 2011, Belgrade) and to remind you of the upcoming SAICM African regional meeting (7 and 8 April 2011, Nairobi). • In both instances the secretariat will report on progress with the emerging issues considered in detail at the second International Conference on Chemicals Management (Lead in paint, Chemicals in products, Nanotechnologies and manufactured nanomaterials, and Hazardous Substances within the life cycle of electrical and electronic products) and also to provide a report on progress with managing perflorinated chemicals and the transition to safer alternatives. The OEWG will deal with prioritizing the new nominations for emerging policy issues and their possible inclusion onto the agenda of the third session of the Conference, taking into consideration regional inputs and other information.

  3. In keeping with current practice, the secretariat would like to invite you to make available to the meetings any reports on progress with the issues considered in detail at the second session. • For the African regional meeting, could we ask you to confirm by 4 March 2011 that the SAICM website on each emerging policy issue is up-to-date (see links to each emerging policy issue on the page http://www.saicm.org/index.php?menuid=9&pageid=392&submenuheader=). The secretariat will use this material to write a short summary of progress for the meeting (and translation to French). In addition, you may wish to provide an INF document (english only) also by 4 March 2011 or register to participate in the meeting itself to answer additional questions.

  4. For the OEWG we would like to request that any progress report you would like to make reaches us at the latest by 17 June 2011. We have tentatively make provisions for one INF document per emerging policy issue. The secretariat will provide a summary of the progress in UN languages. Provision of any supplementary INF documents in languages other than English would be the responsibility of the author of the document. • In addition for the OEWG we are investigating the logistics for a technical briefing session which might take place either on Sunday 28 August 2011 or at another convenient time. We would be grateful if you could register your interest in participating in such a session so that we can complete the logistical arrangements required.
