Longitudinal Study Evaluating Students' Basic English Skills Progress

This study, conducted in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Duluth, aims to measure students' knowledge of standard formal English over academic years. Pre and post-tests are administered to assess grammar, punctuation, mechanics, spelling, and usage. The results provide insights into student progress, strengths, weaknesses, and the effectiveness of teaching strategies.

Methodology --Pre and Post Tests given each September and May --100-question test (adapted from English Simplified, l999), designed to measure basic skills including --grammar --punctuation --mechanics --spelling --usage --Computer-based analysis system provides for “feedback sheets” for each teacher/each class

  5. Implications --Measure students’ progress over academic years   --Identify specific strengths/weaknesses in individual student performance --Assessments used to evaluate the effectiveness of department curricula and teaching strategies
