What is the HOPE Scholarship? • A merit based scholarship program that encourages secondary and postsecondary academic achievement at Georgia institutions • Funded by the Georgia Lottery for Education and administered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission • Covers: • Tuition • HOPE-approved mandatory fees • Book allowance

In all cases, students must • Not have a Bachelor’s degree • Meet Georgia Residency requirements • Be a U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident Alien (12/24 months) prior to the term for which HOPE is sought • Register with Selective Service (males only) • Not be in default or owe a refund on Federal or State programs • Be in compliance with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990 • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress www.finaid.gatech.edu/policies/sap

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) • Applies to all financial aid recipients…including HOPE • Measures Include: • Qualitative …….GPA standards( A separate standard than Academic Standing) • Quantitative…….Must successfully complete 75% of course work attempted each term • Maximum Time Frame…..Sets a maximum on the number of total hours attempted toward a degree

  5. Maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress • Qualitative (GPA) • Freshman = 1.7 • Sophomore = 1.9 • Junior / Senior = 2.0 • Quantitative • Satisfactorily complete at least 75% of all attempted credit hours

  6. Factors that affect SAP… • Dropping classes • Changing majors/adding minors • Transfer hours • Second Undergraduate degrees • Repeated coursework • Incomplete grades • Missing/Not reported grades • All course work is evaluated whether aid is received that term or not

How can Academic Advisors help? • Be aware of possible SAP implications • Prepare written statements, when requested to support appeals… • Program Plans that outline specific course requirements for those pursuing second degrees and/or those approaching Max Time Frame • Verification that student has sought academic counseling in selecting coursework or deciding to drop

Freshman • Georgia Resident • Georgia High School • 3.0 high school GPA (college preparatory diploma) *GSFC will determine the high school GPA for All* Special exceptions are possible for: • Non-residents with military tuition waivers • Out-of-state high school graduates • Home-Schooled students

  9. For all other Undergrads • Georgia Resident • 30 or more post secondary credit hours • 3.0 cumulative GPA • At most recent Tier Checkpoint (30th, 60th, 90th credit hour) *Financial aid office will determine HOPE GPA using college coursework attempted since high school graduation*

  13. Length of Scholarship HOPE ends when the student: Receives 1st Bachelor’s degree ** OR ** Reaches the 127 credit hour paid/attempt limit If the major requires more than 127 credits, HOPE will pay until they reach the limit for the major (www.registrar.gatech.edu)

  14. Example of HOPE Maximum • If the major requires 122 credits to graduate • max = 127 • If the major requires 132 credits to graduate • max = 132

  16. What if I double-major? …then the maximum is based on the degree program that requires the least number of hours (HOPE doesn’t make exceptions for minors or the 5 year BS/MS degree option

  17. Two Types of Limits • Attempted Hours • College credit attempted since high school graduation • Paid Hours • College credit paid by HOPE Scholarship, HOPE Grant, and HOPE ACCEL (effective Fall 2004)

  18. Example ofAttempted vs. Paid Hours High School (Joint Enrollment) = 9 credits paid with ACCEL funds 1st Semester @ GT = 12 credit hours Attempted hours = 12 Paid hours = 12 + 9 = 21

  19. Credit Hours Attempted Hours Included in HOPE : • College coursework after high school graduation • Pass / Fail • Learning Support • Regents’ test prep • Withdrawn “W” • Withdrawn Failing “WF” • GT Forgiven Coursework- HOPE will not exclude forgiven coursework, HOPE GPA may/will vary from GT

Credit Hours Attempted Hours Excluded from HOPE: • AP / IB / CLEP* • Joint Enrolled Hours* • Dual Credit Hours* • Audit Hours / CO-OP Hours • Classes dropped during Drop / Add • GSFC approved Medical and Military Withdrawn coursework *These hours may count for students who were not HOPE Scholars upon high school graduation if they were taken after July 1, 2008 and accepted by GT

  21. Graduate Coursework …. HOPE recipients enrolled in graduate coursework must provide documentation from their advisor specifying graduate course will count towards undergraduate degree otherwise HOPE will not pay for the graduate course

Maintaining Your Award Your overall HOPE GPA must be 3.0 at the following checkpoints: • Tier Checkpoints 30th, 60th, 90th attempted credit hour • Spring Checkpoints Every spring term for all students (co-op/intern students should be aware their fall GPA will count for the end of spring checkpoint) • 127th Credit Hour Majors that require more than 127 credit hours

  23. REGAINING HOPE HOPE can be REGAINED! If the overall HOPE GPA is 3.0 at the 30th, 60th, or 90th credit hour checkpoint… ….if the student loses HOPE at a checkpoint and receives a grade change they will be re-evaluated Special Note: The 90th credit hour checkpoint is the last checkpoint to regain HOPE…

  25. Attending Another School • Study Abroad • Foreign Exchange • Cross Enrollment • Transient ….These credit hours count toward the HOPE GPA and HOPE attempted hours. Student must submit a transcript to Registrar upon completion to continue eligibility for HOPE payments

TRANSIENT • Enrolled at a Georgia institution as a transient • Complete a HOPE Scholarship Transient Form to receive HOPE payment at the host institution (www.finaid.gatech.edu/forms) * If the student doesn’t complete this form they will not receive HOPE for the term, but the hours will still count in the attempted hours and the HOPE GPA calculation*

  27. How can Academic Advisors help? • Be aware of possible SAP and/or HOPE implications • Prepare written statements, when requested to support graduate coursework • Advise students to contact our office when in doubt • Recommend students to visit our website and information sessions
