  3. Brain made of neurons Neurons= brain cells More then 100 billion neurons in the brain A neuron can transmit between 250 and 2,500 impulses per second

  4. Neuron Parts Dendrites: receive messages from other cells (dendrite=tree in latin, like branches) Cell body: contains the nucleus and is main part of the cell

  5. Cool Facts 1 neuron can have up to 10,000 dendrites Cell body about the size of the period on your paper

  6. Learning (or memory) Occurs where neurons connect (through dendrites) The more connections you can make with other brain cells, the better you will remember something

  7. Brain Food Oxygen-to send pulses or signals Glucose (sugar found in fruits)- to grow and live Water-to clear out signals and to get oxygen

  8. Sleep Is a time when we process the information that we have learned and experienced during the day Mice replayed maze in brain during sleep Important for learning! WATCH IT!WARNING!

  11. Self Concept Important In Learning • Self Concept=how you view yourself, negatively or positively • Long-term memory storage happens in the Hippocampus, which is right next door to the Amygdala=emotions

  12. Feelings and Emotions • How you feel about yourself and the content will affect how you learn it • Your feelings and emotions can change!

  13. 28/3 Rule • You have to be exposed to something 28 times during a 3 week period with a full nights sleep in-between.

  14. Moral Of the Story • EAT! • BREATHE! • MOVE! • SLEEP! • REPEAT! • AND BE MERRY!

  15. Learning Styles • Visual Learner • Auditory Learner • Kinesthetic Learner

  16. Visual Learner • Needs to see pictures, graphs, and likes graphic organizers

  17. Auditory Learner • Needs to hear information, likes stories, verbal processor

  18. Kinesthetic Learner • Needs to create things, hands on activities, move around, etc.

  19. Warm-up 9/6 • Teach the Teacher: Tell me the top three best things about your personality. • Review: List as many keys and important things for your brain and learning. • Learning Target: learning styles and binders

  20. What to Put on Your Binder Covers • Your Name (super big) • Biology (I or II) • A description and a icon for each of the science life goals

  21. Warm-up 9/7/11 • Teach the Teacher: If you could be a car, what kind of car would best fit your personality? • Review: List any six keys for being a happy and healthy human being and any of the 7 main intelligences • Learning Target: What is science, biology, and what does it mean to be alive.
