NAEP - NATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS • PRESENTLY GIVEN TO RANDOMLY SELECTED 5TH, 8TH, AND 12TH GRADERS • TEST DATE – FEB. 14 • REQUIRES PARENTAL NOTIFICATION AND TACIT PERMISSION • USED TO DETERMINE TN’S EDUCATIONAL STATUS COMPARED TO OTHER STATES & NATIONS • CURRENTLY, TN’S RANKING IS LOW

PARCC- Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career • COMING IN 2014-2015 • REPLACES TCAP LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH (TCAP WILL STILL BE USED TO TEST FOR SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE) • CRA IS THE PREPARATION FOR PARCC • ON-LINE TESTING • TIED TO COMMON CORE STANDARDS • FORMAT WILL BE CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE AND MULTIPLE CHOICE

  15. SO, WHY ALL THE CHANGES? • ON NATIONAL ASSESSMENTS, LIKE NAEP, TENNESSEE PERFORMS BELOW THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. • OUR EDUCATIONAL STATUS HAS AN IMPACT ON BUSINESSES COMING TO TENNESSEE. • THE WORLD OF WORK HAS CHANGED. TENNESSEE HAS COMMITTED TO HAVING OUR STUDENTS COLLEGE AND CAREER READY.

  16. How does this impact your child? • Expectations are higher • Curriculums are changing • Instruction may look different • Use of more technology resources • Classwork that is relevant to the real world • Skills that are needed for college and career • Different classroom assessments

  17. What can parents do? • Student attendance is critical. • Check your child’s agenda often. Know what your child is learning in school. Just ask. • Emphasize the importance of your child doing the work. • Connect school success to college & career success. • Promote a no excuses mentality. • Proper sleep, eating, and exercise habits are tied to increased learning and achievement. • Establish daily routines for completing school work.
