Take 20 minutes and make a list of your own work-related values as an individual. Post the top 3 values to the discussion and reflect on what influenced you to adopt those values. 2. Now, take another 20 minutes and identify and post 3 values that you think are held by Trident University. How did you determine that these were the institution’s values? (You may use your own experience with the University, the University’s website, its Facebook page, or any other source that you feel exemplifies Trident’s values as an institution. Specify your sources.) Week 2 Discussion Question: In this second week you are asked to discuss values congruency: (a) between ourselves and Trident, and (b) between Trident and its environment.

  2. Read the class responses from Week 1. Discuss the alignment of University values with your personal values and those of the broader, higher education environment. (Think of the constituencies and stakeholders who interact with the University and what their interests and needs might be.) Some questions you may want to address include: o What values most resonate with the way you think about your education as well as the values that reflect the University? What University values support relationships with the institution’s key constituencies? o Does the University put its values into practice? How? Where does the University fall short in terms of aligning with your personal values? Where does the University fall short of aligning with the environment of higher education? What tensions may arise when the University values do not align with those of its environment? o Are the University values uniquely American, or would they translate well into other cultures? Respond to posts by at least two of your classmates in the Second Week of the Module 1 discussion.   Trident MGT 501 Module 2 Discussions Week 1 Discussion Question: Have you seen or reliably heard of such behavior? If so, please cite an example. And what kind of costs/losses (financial and otherwise) might be associated with your example? Week 2 Discussion Questions: Do you think this sort of behavior might be somewhat widespread in organizations? Do leaders/managers you know pay much attention to the notion of perceived fairness? Trident MGT 501 Module 3 Discussions Week 1 Discussion Question: What are the key issues/challenges/opportunities you face, both short and long term? Week 2 Discussion Question: Describe three key elements of your merger plan. Trident MGT 501 Module 4 Discussions Week 1 Discussion Question: Does this list of “sociopolitical” skill categories match your sense of what is most required to help ensure a leader’s early success in a new role/position? What might you add or subtract to help ensure the most effective transition into a new job?

  3. Week 2 Discussion Question: In your view, how important to your enduring success in the job are your early efforts in a new leadership role? Presuming you already have practiced some or all of the 10 items, how did you learn to do so? Trident MGT 501 Module 4 Summary and Reflection Identify one substantive topic in the course that you will use in your job in the future. Specify the topic, your job, and how you will use this knowledge to be a better manager or leader. Looking back at the self-assessments you conducted throughout the course, name one specific change you will make in your behavior to try to build your management and leadership competencies or skills. Trident MGT 501 Module 1 Case and SLP Module 1 – Case MANAGING INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR Assignment Overview Clear organizational goals can drive employee efforts throughout the organization. So can the organization’s values. Quicken Loans was named number 12 in Fortune Magazine’s 2015 rankings for 100 Best Companies to Work For in America (the 12thyear they have been on the list). Why? In part because it is a values-driven firm with strong corporate goals that translate into how work gets done on a daily basis. Read about Quicken Loans in the following research report: Quicken Loans. (2015) In Great Places to Work. Retrieved from.greatrated.com/quicken- loans”>http://us.greatrated.com/quicken-loans Now, check out the Quicken Loans website to get a look at the company from an “official” point of view. Scroll down to “Why you should use Quicken Loans.” Be sure to click on the link to “Our Values.” Quicken Loans: About us. U.S. Office of Personnel Management..opm.gov/perform/articles/2000/apr00- 7.asp”>http://www.opm.gov/perform/articles/2000/apr00-7.asp Remember to follow Trident’s guidelines for master’s-level writing. (See .trident.edu/wp- content/uploads/2015/06/Well-Written-Paper.pdf”>The Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper.) Case Assignment In a 4- to 5-page essay, address the following:  Define the problem:Discuss Quicken Loans’ key goals and values. Conduct research about working at Quicken Loans to get more than just the company’s view from its website. For example, the site “Glass Door” contains pro-and-con reviews of a number of companies by current and former employees. (Note: Do not use Wikipedia as a source. It is acceptable to use Wikipedia as a starting point to get background information, but always verify the information from a more reliable source.) Analyze the cause:How do Quicken Loans’ corporate values and goals concerning employees, customers, and the business affect the job satisfaction and motivation of the people who work there? To answer this question, analyze the effect Quicken Loans’ goals and values have on job satisfaction and motivation by using the Job Characteristics Model (from the Background materials). Bring in what the Job Characteristics Model teaches us by using examples from the Quicken Loans’ approach. Emphasize skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback (job characteristics). Then make the argument (providing evidence from employee comments or surveys) that this affects experienced meaningfulness, responsibility, and knowledge of results (critical psychological states) and what the model says the results are. Propose a solution: Is this approach something every business should adopt? Why or why not? Defend your answer in terms of the Job Characteristics Model. Be sure to explain whyyou recommend the solution(s) that you do. Your recommendations must be based on evidence (what you learned from the Job Characteristics Model and other sources).   Overall, you must demonstrate that you have read, understood, and can apply the background materials by citing them in support of your analysis. Assignment Expectations Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the Case rubric. The following is a review of the rubric criteria:  Assignment-Driven: Does the paper fully address all aspects of the assignment? Is the assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements? Critical Thinking: Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis? 

  5. Business Writing: Is the essay logical, well organized and well written? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding, or is justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct quotations? Effective Use of Information: Does the submission demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional sources used provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall paper? Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing, by inclusion of proper citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been included, and are these properly cited? Have all sources cited in the paper been included on the References page? Timeliness:Has the assignment been submitted to TLC (Trident’s learning management system) on or before the module’s due date?    Module 1 – SLP MANAGING INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR The SLP for this course involves making a personal assessment of a relevant set of skills, focusing on your strengths and identifying any weaknesses that may have been revealed. You will then be asked to create a plan by which you can “grow” your strengths and shore up your weaknesses. By the end of the project, you will have a personal management profile and action plan. As we have discussed, your values and attitudes interact with your personality to create a strong effect on your work life. The fit between an individual’s personality and a company’s “style” is essential to job satisfaction. Someone who is risk-averse, for example, would probably be unhappy at 3M, a company with a reputation for innovation and risk-taking. Understanding the impact of your own personality on others helps you build productive work relationships with peers, subordinates, and bosses, alike. Refer to the required and optional readings for this module, and any other readings which will help you in understanding personality styles and how they affect organizational effectiveness. Remember to follow Trident’s guidelines for master’s-level writing. (See.trident.edu/wp- content/uploads/2015/06/Well-Written-Paper.pdf”>The Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper.) Be sure to click on the interpretive links when you have finished so you can interpret your score.

  6. Prepare a 2- to 3-page essay that addresses the following: How does my personality type affect my career and effectiveness at my job?    Complete the assessment according to the guidelines and interpret the results. Include the actual results in an Appendix at the end of your paper. Review the sections on Self-Awareness and Personal Growth, as well as Career Choices and incorporate this information in formulating your responses. What did the test reveal about you? What can you infer from this test about your strengths and weaknesses? How does what you know about your personality type affect your motivation? Is this limited to a specific type of situation? What specific steps can you take to increase your strengths and build up weaknesses?     SLP Assignment Expectations Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the SLP rubric. The following is a review of the rubric criteria:.  Assignment-Driven: Does the paper fully address all aspects of the assignment? Is the assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements? Case Assignment Prepare a 4- to 5-page paper. Support your discussion with references to the background readings, PowerPoint presentations, and additional research as needed. In your paper address the following: Define the problem: What exactly is the problem being faced by Strident? How does group dynamics (communications, trust, and conflict) contribute to the situation? How does the Johari Window model contribute to our understanding of the problem? Analyze the cause: What forces are working to create this problem? Propose a solution: What does the company need to do to turn this situation around? Use the Johari Window model to suggest solutions to the problems this organization is facing. Be specific in your suggestions of recommended actions. Overall, you must demonstrate that you have read, understood, and can apply the background materials by citing them in support of your analysis. Assignment Expectations Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the Case rubric. The following is a review of the rubric criteria: Assignment-Driven: Does the paper fully address all aspects of the assignment? 10. Timeliness:Has the assignment been submitted to TLC (Trident’s learning management system) on or before the module’s due date? Trident MGT 501 Module 3 Case and SLP Module 3 – Case LEADERS AND LEADERSHIP Assignment Overview The Case Assignment for this module involves viewing several vignettes depicting different leadership styles. Using critical thinking skills, you will identify which leadership style the character draws upon, and defend your answer using the leadership model principles presented in the background materials. Case Assignment View the following six video clips* and follow the Instructions listed below to write your 4- to 5-page essay. 1. This clip is from Dead Poets Society. Compare and contrast the leadership styles of both Mr. Keating and Mr. Nolan. CineGraf (2014). O captain, my captain! 2. This clip is from the movie Office Spacewhere the main character is asked to work the weekend. What leadership style is Lumberg using? ResoluteProductions (2011). Office Space—Working tomorrow. 3. The third clip is a scene from Remember the Titanswhere the coach tells the players about the Battle of Gettysburg. mikedaquila (2011) Remember the Titans Coach Boone Speech 4. This clip is from The Princess Brideand depicts a battle of wits between Vazzini and Roberts where Vazzini has to decide which cup is poisoned. Vecchiarelli, M.S. What leadership style does the coach use and then what style does the mother use when she goes onto the field to tell Michael that the football team is like his family and he has to protect them? MacPherson, J. (2011). Blindside p and p 2 6. The last clip is from The Devil Wears Pradawhere Andrea arrives at the offices of Runwayto interview for a job as assistant to Miranda. moviemomentsAUS’s channel (2012). Devil Wears Prada. *Note: These clips are all on YouTube. If you cannot access YouTube from a network that blocks access, you will need to use a different network or borrow another computer to complete the assignment. If neither is possible, contact your professor for instructions for an alternate assignment for writing a research paper on the Complexity Theory of Leadership. Instructions:  Discuss what leadership model(s) best describe the approach to leadership exhibited in the video clip. o Trait Model o Behavioral Model

  11. Contingency Model (identify which one—Fiedler Model, Path-Goal Model, and/or Normative Decision Model) Influence (Power) (identify which one—Reward Power, Coercive Power, Legitimate Power, Referent Power and/or Expert Power) Transformational Leadership Devote a section in your paper to each of the video clips. Each section should have a heading with the name of the video clip followed by the leadership style/styles portrayed. For example: Return of the Jedi(Coercive Power). For each of the video clips, you will need to use at least one of the leadership models listed above, and a few have more than one portrayed. Also you must use of all five of the leadership styles at least once in your paper. Analyze the effectiveness of this leadership approach. Give examples of how specific behaviors or attitudes illustrate specific tenets of the leadership model you have chosen. Defend your answer with examples from the clip and references to the appropriate background material. Is this leadership style appropriate for this situation? Do you think it will be effective? Why or why not? Under what conditions might this approach be most appropriate? Most inappropriate? o o o     There is not one right answer to which leadership style is being represented in each clip—it is open to interpretation. However, the critical thinking in this assignment hinges on how well you defend your choice of leadership style. Make a strong and logical argument by using examples from the clips to demonstrate the characteristics of the style as presented in the background materials. Keep in mind there may be more than one leadership style represented in a video clip. You may want to do additional research to supplement what is on the background page. Outside research does not substitute for citing and referencing the background material, but may add additional support and depth to your arguments. Assignment Expectations Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the Case rubric. The following is a review of the rubric criteria: Assignment-Driven: Does the paper fully address all aspects of the assignment? Is the assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements? Critical Thinking: Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis? Business Writing: Is the essay logical, well organized and well written? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included? Are paraphrasing and

Have all sources cited in the paper been included on the References page? Timeliness:Has the assignment been submitted to TLC (Trident’s learning management system) on or before the module’s due date? Module 3 – SLP LEADERS AND LEADERSHIP Most of what is written about leadership has been written by western scholars and practitioners—mostly from the United States. Thus, what we have studied in this module so far reflects western assumptions and values about how to improve leadership performance. But leadership quality, we know, is mostly about perception. If the followers perceive that a person is a leader, that person will be treated with respect and the followers will grant him the power and authority to guide their actions. These perceptions can vary across cultures, and successful global leaders know that leadership is viewed differently in different cultures and modify their behaviors to align with culturally diverse expectations. This is what is called Cultural Intelligence. (If this is a topic that particularly interests you and you would like to increase your capacity for cultural intelligence, you are encouraged to enroll in LED520: Cross-Cultural Communication and Leadership. This course can serve as an elective in several degree programs.) Required Reading

  13. The following reading discusses the importance of cultural awareness in increasing organizational effectiveness: O’Reilly, C. (2013). Why is cultural intelligence important? Retrieved from.trainingzone.co.uk/topic/soft- skills/why-cultuiral-intelligence-important/181942″>http://www.trainingzone.co.uk/topic/soft-skills/why- cultuiral-intelligence-important/181942 Assignment In this exercise, there are two sets of quizzes (A & B) that you will participate in. 1. Select either the Cross Cultural Work Scenariosor Working Globally Across Culturesquiz from.commisceo-global.com/quizzes/cultural-awareness- quizzes?view=qcategory&cat_id=39″>http://www.commisceo-global.com/quizzes/cultural- awareness-quizzes?view=qcategory&cat_id=39 2. Choose any one of the country quizzes at.commisceo-global.com/quizzes/cultural-awareness- quizzes?view=qcategory&cat_id=41″>http://www.commisceo-global.com/quizzes/cultural- awareness-quizzes?view=qcategory&cat_id=41that looks interesting to you. After completing the quizzes, address the following questions in a 2- to 3-page essay:       Which quizzes did you take? Include your actual results in an Appendix at the end of your paper. Were you surprised at your score? What strengths do you think you have in the area of inter-cultural awareness? What weaknesses are you able to identify? If there were gaps between your assessment results and your own thoughts about your level of cultural awareness, why do these gaps exist? Create a plan of specific, concrete actions you can take to build on your strengths and improve areas of weakness so that you improve your cultural awareness. Why is it important for managers to increase their levels of cultural awareness?   SLP Assignment Expectations Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the SLP rubric.

  14. Timeliness: Has the assignment been submitted to TLC (Trident’s learning management system) on or before the module’s due date? Trident MGT 501 Module 4 Case and SLP Module 4 – Case ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND CULTURE Assignment Overview This assignment focuses on the importance of organizational structure and its possible impact on employees. After finishing with the Background page and readings, go to the following interview with Rosabeth Moss Kanter, who is a renowned Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, and an influential business advisor. Among other things, in this interview she talks about the evolution of changes in organizational structure in the past decades, and the link to employees’ well-being and functioning. Required Reading Puffer, S. (2004) Changing organizational structures: An interview with Rosabeth Moss Kanter. Academy of Management Executive, 18(2).

  15. The following article looks at changing organizational structures as open systems and the effect on managers: Buhler, P. M. (2011). Changing organizational structures and their impact on managers. Supervision, 72(2), 24-26. Both of these articles can be found in the Trident University Library. Case Assignment Write a 4- to 5-page critique answering the questions below.  An organization’s structure can have significant effects on its members. What might those effects be? Analyze the behavioral implications of different organizational designs and use at least two examples, Quicken Loans being one of them. Is it possible to generalize and say that a certain structure is better than others? That is, is there a structure that is superior in terms of its effects on its members? Take a stand and defend your comments with references to the concepts in the readings in this module and any previous modules that you find relevant. Demonstrate that you have read, understood, and can apply the background materials by citing them in support of your analysis.  Assignment Expectations Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the Case rubric. Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding, or is justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct quotations? Effective Use of Information: Does the submission demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated

  16. effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional sources used provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall paper? Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing, by inclusion of proper citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been included, and are these properly cited? Have all sources cited in the paper been included on the References page? Timeliness: Has the assignment been submitted to TLC (Trident’s learning management system) on or before the module’s due date? Module 4 – SLP ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND CULTURE For the SLP 4 assignment, you will explore some aspects of an organization’s culture, at least as you see it.
