Module 1 – Case

ACADEMIC WRITING

Case Assignment

Note: Module 1 SLP should be completed before the Module 1 Case.

After viewing “An Education in Equality,” “Learning Begins at Home,” “A Military Education,” and “an

Education,” write an organized and well-supported essay in which you make three observations about

education and what impacts (and enhances) student learning. Consider impacts and influences such as

parenting, home life, society, race, technology, ethnicity, socioeconomics, etc.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should

include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief

background on the topic or situation. In this case, it might be the state of education today. The last

sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which

in this case, would be what impacts/influences student learning.

a well supported essay includes supporting points

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must

decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each impact or

enhancement? Will you divide the body of your paper into three paragraphs, one for each impact? In any

case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each

body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression

that connects the reader to their world. You may wish to offer suggestions to reader about what makes for

exceptional student learning.

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and

spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the

Module 1 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English found in the

course syllabus.

Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch

margins. A grade will be determined based on the Module 1 Case expectations and the Trident University

General Education rubric for English.

The first person “I” is not used in a formal essay, nor is the passive “you.” In place of “you,” “one” may be

used.

No secondary sources are to be used in the process of writing this first paper; it is to be entirely written

based on one’s point of view and supported with body points and details.

Assignment Expectations

Write an essay (no less than four pages in length) that states an original thesis statement on what

impacts/influences student learning.

Demonstrate the ability to write clearly and cohesively when expressing one’s ideas and/or intended

purpose.

Demonstrate the ability to clearly state and support a thesis in an organized and cohesive essay.

Case Assignment

Note: Module 2 SLP should be completed before the Module 2 Case.

Reflecting on the four gender-related videos for Module 2, write a well-organized and well-supported

essay in which you help challenge society’s limiting gender narratives.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should

include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief

background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be an explanation of gender roles, stereotypes,

myths, and/or controls in society today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The

thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming what needs

to be done to limit gender narratives in society today.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must

decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each change? Will

you divide the body of your paper into three or more paragraphs, one for each point? In any case, each

body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body

paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression

that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where is our society headed? Is it too late for

change?

children?” write a well-organized and well-supported essay on technology and children.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should

details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph,

which in this case would be each supporting point.

This essay must include no less than EIGHT citations from:

Module 4 – Case

PERSUASIVE WRITING

Case Assignment

Note: Module 4 SLP should be completed before the Module 4 Case.

Module 4 Case is a Persuasive essay in which the writer encourages the reader to give in some way to a

worthy cause. The writer must first select a licensed not-for-profit organization with a web presence

before identifying a specific audience and appeal(s). Please note that giving comes in all shapes and

sizes and not just financial contributions.

A significant part of persuasive writing is appeal. Various appeals in your essay may be used to

encourage your target audience to act. It may be helpful to imagine you’re writing a persuasive speech in

which you must capture your audience s attention

which you must capture your audience’s attention, reel them in with specific details (and appeals), and

then seal the deal with the close in which you leave them with a lasting impression.

As always, a well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction,

should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a

brief background on the organization or cause. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis

statement. The thesis statement would likely be the ways in which your reader can “give.”

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must

decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence

that states the main point of the paragraph. Perhaps each paragraph could explain in detail the specific

ways to give.

This essay must include no less than FOUR SOURCES (the organization’s website may be one).

This essay must include no less than EIGHT citations and should be a combination of direct quotations

and paraphrased quotations with or without the author’s name.

Please note that copying information word-for-word from a website is plagiarism. It is important that you

use the information and cite accordingly. Plagiarism is a serious offense and grounds for failure. Please

ask any questions before submitting questionable work.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression.

This might be a great place to explain to your reader the value of giving as well as provide contact

information to get involved.

The essay must also include a Reference List that includes the website used (as well as others, if

applicable).

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and

spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the

Module 4 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.

Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch

margins.

While the first person “I” is not typically used in a formal essay, it may be used if you have a personal

connection to the organization as credibility can be an effective tool in persuasion.

ENG 102 Module 1 Discussion Latest-Trident

Week 1 Discussion

Education

Think about your early years of education (elementary through high school) and identify that which

influenced and/or impacted you. Consider your family life, friendships (or lack of), specific classrooms,

teaching styles, teachers, other students, etc. What stuck with you and what have you let go? Do early

experiences “build character” or perhaps linger?

ENG 102 Module 2 Discussion Latest-Trident

Week 2 Discussion

Gender

We have all heard about the girl who wants to join the wrestling team and the boy who wants an Easy

Bake Oven. Think about some of your earliest experiences with gender. Consider at school,

extracurricular activities, your parents, your friends, etc. Discuss gender roles, stereotypes, myths, and/or

controls in society that existed then and you see exist today. Do you feel that males or females have

more or less controls placed on them by society

more or less “controls” placed on them by society? Is it fair? Do you believe that boys and girls/men and

women should stick to the qualities, interests, etc., that society deems appropriate for their gender?

ENG 102 Module 3 Discussion Latest-Trident

Week 3 Discussion

Techno-Generation

Of course we can laugh when our parents and grandparents (or even we) reflect on the “good ol’ days”

when life was simple and children played in the yard, made fun out of anything they could find, and spent

minimal time in front of the “boob tube” and even less playing video games. But even if television, the

media, film, computers/internet, and video games aren’t necessarily bad for children and teens, give

some thought to what they are missing out on by spending so much time with these everyday “outlets.”

What might they be doing instead and what might those other activities do for their mental, emotional, and

physical health? Have we lost touch with human interaction/communication on some level? Have we

come so far that it is too late to get some of that back?

ENG 102 Module 4 Discussion Latest-Trident

Week 4 Discussion

Giving

How do you feel about “giving back” or “paying it forward?” Despite your own everyday difficulties and

responsibilities, have you ever asked yourself, “How can I help?” Have you any experiences to share?

Consider some of the many ways that one can “pay it forward” and share them here with your fellow

students. Please note that many ways are so simple! Smiles and thumbs up are free!

Week 4 Reflective Discussion

Reflection and Integration

Reflecting on the four modules completed this session, provide suggestions and advice to those taking

this course in subsequent sessions. What would you have done differently a second time around? The

same? If your goal is to provide the necessary tools for success for your fellow student, think of the top

five suggestions and explain each with specific details and examples from the course.
