Preparing for Adulthood: Supporting Youth Employment

The Preparing for Adulthood programme aims to support youth employment and improve outcomes for young people with SEN. It includes pathfinder support, wider support events, and best practice and information sharing. Learn from past initiatives and share knowledge with government, agencies, families, and young people. Raise aspirations and share success stories to inspire others. Develop person-centered transition planning with an employment focus and provide meaningful work experience. Encourage the development of post-16 options that lead to paid employment. Ensure high quality employment support when young people leave education. Collaborate with all partners to create a shared vision and strategy for youth employment.

Preparing for Adulthood The Programme • 2 year programme • Funded by Department for Education to support new SEN reforms The Preparing for Adulthood programme will: • Build on the learning from past initiatives • Support peer to peer learning at a local level to improve outcomes • Share knowledge of what works, the challenges and solutions with Government, local agencies, families and young people.

Start at the beginning • Build the key messages into your Early Years work • Ensure young disabled people are employed in places families use the most • Provide information on what is available to help people achieve good outcomes (local offer) and get feedback from families. • Provide opportunities for families to meet young people and families who are in paid employment, independent living, have good health and are part of communities with friends and relationships http://aspirationsforlife.org

Raise aspirations and share what has worked for others • Raise aspirations throughout the whole system • Children young people and families, all professionals who work with them, commissioners and providers • Share evidence of what works and what has helped other young people moving to adulthood with paid employment • Support families (welfare advice, chance to work through concerns)

  11. Meaningful work experience in real work settings Think about Saturday jobs and holiday jobs also

Develop personalised curriculums sochildren learn what they need to get jobs Supported employment agencies engaged whilst at school and college Vocational profiling in school linked to the 0-25 Education Health and Care plan (e.g Nottinghamshire) Employment focussed curriculums • Communication skills • Person centred planning • Travel training • Money and time skills • People skills • Work awareness

Develop post 16 options that lead to paid employment For example, • Embedding supported employment in schools • Supported internships • Apprenticeships • Traineeships • Support for young people to set up their own businesses Making the most of the new study programmes and flexibilities offered by new schools funding reforms and personal budgets
