  2. Payload Team Members • Dr. William Farrow MSOE Advisor • Katie Allen UW – Green Bay Chemistry • David Dahl Carthage College Physics/Mathematics • Daniel Hawk CMN Biology/Chemistry • Cooper LaFond MSOE Electrical Engineering Technology • Brian Nguyen MSOE Mechanical Engineering • Nathan Sward MSOE Mechanical Engineering

  3. Program Background • Ten week summer undergraduate internship. • Six person team made up of different disciplines. • Goal: To develop, design, and build a payload that carries out an experiment(s) in a near-space environment. • Utilizes a high altitude weather balloon to carry the payload to approximately 100,000 ft. • Constraints: • Six pound maximum payload mass. • Survive in a high altitude environment (i.e. pressure & temperature). • Limited budget of $4000.

  4. Imaging Experiment • To determine difference between Green and non-Green Space. • Within mapped green space, to identify plants sensitive to the stress of over fertilization. • To see if we can image invasive species. • Purple Loose Strife • Wild Canary Grass • To see if filters could be used for detection of algal blooms.

  5. Imaging Test NDVI Filtered NVEI Threshold

  6. In Flight Recorder • 20 Dollar SpongeBob Kids Camera. • Takes 640x480 pictures as well as AVI Video.

  7. Payload Construction: Mechanics

  8. Payload Construction: Electronics

  9. Data Logger Servo Controller

  10. Results: Imaging Cameras • We can determine the difference between Green and non-Green Space. • We can determine if there is plant stress or potential areas of defectiveness. • With different combinations of filters, water tracking, farm land management or fertilizer/pesticide contamination can be determined.
