  3. Challenges of HIV surveillance • The infection is often asymptomatic • Lab-diagnosis is required • Strong need to protect individuals’ identity • Respect for risk groups • Detailled data on transmission and demography are needed

  4. Problem in Norway 1986 • Laboratories are the main data source • Clinicians often forget to report • Only clinicians have detailled information • Gay community: ”Reports must be anonymous!”

  7. Case reporting is not enough • Depends heavily on who is tested • No testing  no reports  no problem!!?? • Solutions: • Keep up and measure testing numbers • Repeated prevalence measurements among pregnant women • Rather representative of the whole population • Tested anyway
