  1. Passive vs. Active Transport

  2. Passive Transport • Does NOT require energy • Moves substances from higher to lower concentration

  3. Types of Passive Transport • Diffusion - movement of any type of particle from high concentration to low concentration

  4. Types of Passive Transport • Osmosis - movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from higher to lower concentration

  5. Types of Passive Transport • Facilitated Diffusion - movement of molecules across a cell membrane with the help of transport proteins (faster than regular diffusion)

  6. Facilitated Diffusion Animation

  7. Active Transport • Energy IS required • Moves substances from lower concentration to higher concentration

  8. Types of Active Transport • Active transport (general) - substances move from lower to higher concentration {against the concentration gradient}

  9. Types of Active Transport • Endocytosis - large molecules are taken into a cell -Phagocytosis = solids taken in “eat” -Pinocytosis = liquids taken in “drink”

  10. Types of Active Transport • Exocytosis - large molecules exit the cell

  11. Active Transport Animation

  12. The End!
