  1. SALVATION BY FAITH ONLY?

  2. Salvation by Faith Only? BIBLE CHAPEL, Statement of Faith • WE BELIEVE that forgiveness of sins and redemption are obtained through faith alone, in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. Ephesians 2:8-9, 1 Peter 1: 18-19 Doctrinal Statement of theAmerican Baptist Association • We believe that the depraved sinner is saved wholly by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and the requisites to regeneration are repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 13:3-5; John 3:16-18; Acts 20:21; Rom. 6:23; Eph. 2:8, 9)

  3. A Common Misunderstanding • All truth is not found in one verse Ps. 119:160 • Man divided the Bible into verses, not God • Most commonly used verses: • John 3:16, salvation by faith • Romans 5:1, justification by faith • John 1:11-13, faith makes one a child of God • Revelation 3:20, open your heart to Jesus • 1 John 1:8-10, confess and pray for forgiveness • Ephesians 2:8-9, salvation by faith, not works

  4. The Right Understanding • All truth is not found in one verse Ps. 119:160 • All scripture is needed to furnish us with every good work 2 Timothy 3:14-17 • John 3:16, faith is necessary but not sufficient • Romans 5:1, justification by faith but not by faith only: see James 2:24 • John 1:11-13, faith gives the right to become children of God • Revelation 3:20, forgiveness for Christians • 1 John 1:8-10, forgiveness for Christians

  5. Ephesians 2:8-9 • Context is glorifying God for His grace, not explaining the mechanics of salvation • “Not…but” means the “not” portion of the verse is not excluding something but de-emphasizing it • What does it say? What does it not say?

  6. Ephesians 2:8-9 • “Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ(by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus… For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them”

  7. Colossians 2:12-13 • “Buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Himthrough faithinthe working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespassesand the uncircumcision of your flesh,He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all your trespasses”

  8. What Must I Do To Be Saved? Acts 2:37 • Acts 2:38repent and be baptized Acts 9:6 • Acts 9:6 go into the city and be told Acts 9:17-18, 22:16 Acts 16:30 • Acts 16:31believe on the Lord Jesus v.32-34 The answer was never, “Do nothing; it’s all been done by Jesus” Acts 10:5-6, 11:14 10:43,47-48
