  2. I came to America in 1981 from the country of Romania to become a gymnastics coach for the national team.

  3. Where I’m From

  4. I moved into Huntsville, Texas when I came to America. Me and my wife settled here because they wanted a new gym facility there and they asked us to be the coaches.

  5. My Early Life After competing in the 1956 Olympics in the hammer throw, i went to school at the Romania College of Physical Education to study and practice gymnastics. In my last year at the college, i coached the women's gymnastics team, their star was Márta Eross, (Marta Karolyi) and in 1963, I marriedher. We started a gymnastics class in our local Elementary school, later we were asked to start a national school for gymnastics.

Gymnastics & Fame • I have become the most successful coach in the history of gymnastics. • My coaching has made 30 Olympians, 10 Olympic Champions, 15 World Champions, 12 European medalists and 6 U.S. National Champions in 30 years of coaching gymnastics in both Romania and the United States. • I also coached Nadia Comaneci starting age of six, all the way until her Olympic appearance at age 14 in 1976. When she made gymnastics history by winning the gold all-around and scoring seven perfect 10.0’s • I also have coached Mary Lou Retton, Kerri Strug, Kim Zmeskal, TeodoraUngureanu, Betty Okino, Dominique Moceanu, Kristie Phillips, all Olympic Champions.

  7. More Gymnastics Me and my wife both have dual citizen ships from our home countries, mine being Romania, and hers being Hungary, we both came here in 1981. I officially retired from coaching after the 1996 Olympic Games, but came back as the national team coordinator for the Olympics in 2000. ever since, My wife is now the US national team coordinator. I was named women's head coach at the 1988 Olympic Games, after Congress makdme U.S. citizen prior to a five-year residency requirement.

  8. Books and Television I was in the episode "At the Edge of the Worlds", in the ABC Family show Make It or Break ItI played Coach Sasha Belov's father. I wrote the book Feel No Fear: The Power, Passion, and Politics of a Life in Gymnastics with Nancy Ann Richardson I am on the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

  9. I graduated university class's in Romania but learned English by watching Sesame Street in the U.S. Growing up in Romania, it was always a childhood dream to live in Texas for me. On my first Olympic team was the youngest gymnast that amazed the world by achieving the first perfect scores in Olympic gymnastics history.
