  1. A little about Mr. Reid • 2nd year in teaching • I’m a Carolina Boy • Who studied History and Philosophy at Mars Hill College • And Who got lost in Europe for 5 years! • I Finally landed in Troutman!

  2. My family name comes from Scotland, though I have ancestry from many groups, including African American and Native American

  3. COUNTRY BOY BORN AND RAISED! • I grew up in Northern Iredell County. • My father’s family has deep roots in Union Grove, NC. • I love fishing, hiking, camping, and whitewater rafting. • I still have a soft spot for the roots music of my region, including Bluegrass and gospel.

  4. BUT…I Also like to explore the rest of the world! • I lived in Northeast England for five years • I traveled extensively throughout Northern and Western Europe. • I spent a great deal of my time exploring historical sites, like the one in the background that you can see me and my friend trying to storm!

  5. WELCOME TO SOCIAL STUDIES! • This year will be a ‘Virtual trip’ to Europe and South America! • We are going to constantly improve our knowledge by being respectful of each other and following all procedures set by Mr. Reid.

  6. Strategic learning Goal WE WILL MEET SOCIAL STUDIES EXPECTATIONS SET BY THE NORTH CAROLINA STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY, AND WE WILL MEASURE OUR PROGRESS THROUGH COMMON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS

  7. GREECE, ROME, THE HOLOCAUST AND MORE! THIS SEMESTER WILL START OUT WITH AN OVERVIEW OF MAPS, GLOBES, AND GRAPHS. WE WILL THEN MOVE ON TO THE AWESOME FORCES OF THE EARTH AND HOW LANDFORMS ARE CREATED. THEN FOR THE COOL STUFF! WE WILL START IN ANCIENT GREECE AND ROME, AND FOLLOW EUROPEAN HISTORY UP THROUGH THE HOLOCAUST TO THE MODERN DAY. THEN WE WILL TRAVEL ACROSS THE OCEAN IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE GREAT EXPLORERS TO THE NEW WORLD!

OUR MAP FOR THE YEAR (THE TEN ESSENTIALS): • Students will create tools such as maps and databases and use these along with the five themes of geography to generate answers to questions • The Students will recognize the relationship between the natural environment and the culture of South America and Europe. • The students will realize how people impact the environment in good and bad ways • The student will understand the movement of goods, people and ideas. • The students will understand how resources are distributed and why. I claim this Castle For North Carolina!

ESSENTIALS CONTINUED • The student will realize the role that economics play in a person’s life. • The students will make connections between past history and present day issues. • The students will realize the contributions of important people and groups in Europe and South America. • The students will become familiar with different forms of government in Europe and South America • The students will learn about the religions, beliefs and values of different cultures.
