  2. Principles of Gov’t. • Our “Founding Fathers”created a constitution based on beliefs of what people need to be happy and safe.

  3. 7 Principles • The constitution they created includes 7 principles: • Popular Sovereignty • Republicanism • Limited Government • Individual Freedoms (Rights) • Federalism • Separation of Power • Checks and Balances

  4. Popular Sovereignty • The word “POPULAR” comes from the Latin word meaning people. • The word “SOVEREIGNTY” comes from the word sovereign which means king or ruler. • Popular Sovereignty means = People Rule.

  5. The principle of Popular Sovereignty means that the government is run by the consent of the people through their elected representatives.

  6. Republicanism • Republicanism is a principle of gov’t in which leaders are elected for a specific period by the citizens. • Leaders do NOT inherit the power. • When adults VOTE, they are practicing republicanism.
