  1. Cultural Issues By: Daphne, Bob, Sammie and Cacy

  2. How to react in public? (By: Daphne) • Be careful what you do in public!: Western women tend to attract attention from Moroccan men. In general, the best way to react is not at all. Toning down public visibility is always smart.

  3. If you attract unwanted attention politely refuse and stay in your group. Preferably stay in mixed groups to avoid such situations!

  4. How to react in public? (By: Daphne) • Be careful what you say: topics to avoid in conversation with Moroccans include sex, Israel and Palestine, the royal family, and Western Sahara.

  5. Be careful how you eat!: Start by washing your hands. Don’t use you left hand when eating, as this hand is for personal hygiene, and praising good food is always appreciated.

  6. What cultural "rules" should we be aware of?(By: Sammie) • Morocco can be a very liberal country and many Moroccan women do not wear headscarves. However, women should always dress conservatively (no low-cut tops, midriffs, or shorts) out of respect for the culture they are visiting.

  7. Dark sunglasses make it easier to avoid eye contact. If someone won't leave you alone, look for families, a busy shop, or a local woman and don't be afraid to ask for help.

  8. What types of things should we be aware of?(By: Cacy) • Culture in Morocco is different to what you would find in Europe. • It is perfectly normal to eat with your hands (only right hand though) • It is illegal to bring the currency out of the country

  9. Bartering(By: Bob) • In Morocco bartering is a way of life • Do not look excited about the merchandise • Praise the seller • Say that a diffierent boutique had a lower price • Point out any flaws in the merchandise • Say you do not have enough money to meet the seller's "lowest price" • Walk Away - this is the magic trick, usually the seller will wait till you are a little ways away and then call you back for your desired price

  10. THANK YOU!!
