  5. Here are the words:

  6. BED

  7. NIGHT

  8. COMFORT

  9. REST

  10. AWAKE

  11. SNORE

  12. DREAM

  13. TIRED

  14. EAT

  15. SOUND

  16. SLUMBER

  17. WAKE

  18. So those are the words. On that blank sheet of paper, write your name, your full address, phone number and your parents’ names • This is what is called a “distracter activity”

  19. Now, write the words you can recall—in any order I will be going around the room to see how you did.

  20. Now, how many of you remember the word “Aardvark”?

  21. How many of you remember the word “sleep”?

  22. Why do you think this occurred? How do I keep getting this same result?

  23. Schema: A mental map or mental representation of an idea—made up of associations and connections

  24. Let’s examine the idea of schema with a screen on the white board

  25. The brain: • Looks for patterns • Tries to make meaning wherever it can(e.g. clouds, ceiling tiles, etc.)
