Definition • First Generation – neither of the student’s parents/guardians received a 4 year degree. • Low-Income – in a university setting, dictated by federal guidelines. • For Student Support Services, taxable income dictates low-income status. • In the context of USD…..SSS is the primary program supporting this population

  3. Challenges • Financial Struggles • Academic Preparedness • Study Skills • Cultural Transition • Understanding University Culture • Balancing Life (i.e. Freedom from family)

  4. Financial Struggle • Financial Aid and the FAFSA • Home Situation • Compared to the university culture • Money outside of financial aid (i.e. students with jobs)

  5. Academic Preparedness and Study Skills • Caliber of high school in comparison to academic rigor of a university • Majors and areas of study • High school study habits vs. College study skills • Difference in classes, coursework, and grading

  6. Cultural Transition • Transitioning from cultural base and comfort zone to an unfamiliar area • Importance of ethnicity in comparison to university culture • Staying true to culture in a new place • Identity Development
