Blood sugar levels are tightly regulated The body is always balancing blood sugar levels through a process called glucose homeostasis • After a meal, blood sugar levels rise dramatically • The pancreas releases a hormone called insulin • Insulin travels through the blood to cells that use sugar as fuel for energy • Insulin binds to insulin receptors on these cells • The binding of insulin is the signal that facilitates sugar transport into the cell where it is broken down to make energy • Insulin also directs the storage of excess sugar This process is the foundation to a healthy metabolism.
